SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 474,433, dated May 10, 1892.

Be it known that 1, JOHN A. YOUNG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fulbright, in the county of Red River and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Rein- Holder, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in rein-holders; and the objects in view are to provide an attachment for the purpose of preventing the horses tail from engaging the reins, the device being of cheap and simple construction and adapted to be applied to the thills or adjacent parts of the running-gear of a vehicle.

\Vith these objects in view the invention consists in certain features of construction hereinafter specified, and particularly pointed out in the claim.

Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective of a pair of thills, an attachment constructed in accordance with my invention being mounted thereon. Fig. 2 is a detail in front elevation of the attachment.

Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in both the figures of the drawings.

In constructing the attachment I employ a blank of suitable length of wire, said wire bein g of a proper gage, and at equidistant points from the center thereof bend the wire, givingit one complete turn, or nearly so, thus forming a pair of outer rein-guiding eyes 1 and an intermediate transverse straight portion or bar 2. By this bending of the blank I provide a pair of depending terminals 3 and at intervals I give each terminal a coil or twist, thus forming pairs of opposite eyes or loops 4 and 5, the former being a short distance below the eyes or loops 1 and the latter below the loops l. Below these loops the terminals 3 slightly diverge, and at their lower extremities are in this instance laterally bent to form feet or lugs, which are provided with bolt-receiving openings 6. If desired, the manner of constructing the rein-guide may be altered, in that the loops may be soldered or otherwise secured to the wire frame thus formed, and thus convenient means may suggest themselves by which the feet of the frame may be secured to the thills or other portion of the running-gear. However, all thills are provided with bolts 8 for the purpose of securing the angle-plates 9 at the corners of the thills 10, and these bolts I utilize for the purpose of securing the attachment in position. Such a connection is very economical, permits the attachment to be applied to all thills without any other fastening devices, andavoids perforating or otherwise inarring and weakening the thills for the accommodation of the attachment. 1

In employing the attachment if the horse be very tall the reins are passed through the upper loops or eyes 1, if a medium-sized horse the reins are passed through the second or intermediate loops or eyes 4, and if a very small horse the reins are passed through the lower loops 5, so that whatever may be the size of the horse the reins may be passed through loops and supported by them directlyin rear of the terrets. WVhen the lines are in position, they may be held loosely by the hand or dropped casually in the bottom of the vehicle and will not sag between the terret-rings and the attachments, so that the danger of the horse switching his tail over the same 18 avoided, as are also all accidents which so frequently occur from this reason. The device does not interfere with sharp turns of the vehicle nor with the use of the whip.

Having described my invention, what I claim is- The herein-described improved rein-support, the same being formed of wire and comprising a frame having its opposite vertical members secured at their lower ends to the thills, the corners and opposite members being provided with pairs of integrally-formed eyes, and a cross-bar at the topconnectlng said opposite members, substantially as specifled.
