Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PHOTOGRAPHIC NAME-PLATE- Specification forming part of Letters Pat-cnt No. 47,438. dated April 25, 1865.
`To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES E. MAGEERLEY, ot' Paint, in the county of Highland and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful lmprovement in Photographie Name-Plates; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specitication.
The present invention relates to a certain new and useful improvement in photographic name-plates, the object of which is to secure, in addition to the photographing ot' the sittin g person or ot' a picture or view, and upon one and the same negative-plate, the full or any desired portion of the persons name, or title ot' the picture, 83o. To accomplish this result I have invented a photographie namepxate which is so made as to have any name or names or titles easily' inserted in or removed from the same at pleasure, and also to be readily adjustable to the proper focus and position with regard to the photographing apparatus and light, so as to secure its perfect impression upon the negativeplate.
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure lis a front view of the photographic name-plate; Fig. 2, a plan or top view of a portion `ot' the same; Fig. 3, a transverse vertical section, the plane ot' section being indicated by the line A B, Fig. 2 5 Fig. 4, a detail view ot' one of theletters composing the. name.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
a a in the accompanying drawings represent a frame or slide made of any desired material, shape, and length, in which slide,in the proper positions, and so as to be easily removed therefrom at pleasure, are inserted the separate letters, either written or printed, composing the title of the picture or view or the name of the person or persons to be photographed, as represented at Z1 b in Fig. 1.
c is an angular-shaped block securely fastened to the rear side of the frame a at or near its central portion, and having a groove, d,
at right angles to the frame a, extending nearly through the same. y
f is a double wire rod placed within the groove d, and turning on a center or pivot, h, said rod f being so formed or bent as to sufficientl y bear against the sides of the groove d, and thus prevent its moving after having once been properly placed. The frame a rests on this rod f in connect-ion with its lower edge, and is to be placed in front of the person, picture, or view upon the Hoor or other proper surface when desired tophotograph the name or title of the same.
From the above description it is evident that the name-plate can be made toassume any desired position with regard to the snrtace on which it is placed, and thus be readily brought to the proper focus and light.
More than one of the supporting-wires f can be used, if desired, as, for instance, at each ot' the nameplates in connection with its center, but I deem one to be sufficient for all practical and ordinary purposes.
My improvement is also adapted to thetaking ot' ambrotypes, dagnerreotypes, &c., it being only necessary that the letters should be reversed in position.
llaving thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent as an improved article of manufacture- 1. An adjustable photographic name-plate made substantially as herein shown and described.
y 2. The employment, in combination with said name-plate, of the movable letters or cards, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. y
JAMES E. MACKERLEY.
