GHURN DASHBR. No. 474,117. I Patented May 3, 1892.

JOSEPH I-I. EDGERLY, OF MORRILLTON, ARKANSAS.
CHURN-DASHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 474,117, dated May 3, 1892. Application filed October 23, 1891. Serial No. 409,580. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH H. EDGERLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Morrillton, in the county of Conway and State of Arkansas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ohurn-Dashers, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in churn-dashers. A
The object of the present invention is to provide for verticallyreciprocating churnrods a dasher which will rapidly convert cream into butter, and which will not splatter or spill the cream during churning, and by which the cream will be thoroughly aerated.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective- View of a churn-dasher constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view. Fig. 3 is a section taken transversely of one of the wings or blades.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures.
1 designates a dasher-rod provided at its lower end with a spindle or journal 2, upon which are mounted dashers 3 and 4, which are oppositely or reversely arranged and are adapted to be rotated in opposite directions by the vertical reciprocation of the dasherrod, whereby the cream to be churned is thoroughly agitated without splashing or spilling and butter is quickly produced. The dashers 3 and 4: are reversely arranged, and each is constructed of sheet metal or similar material and consists of four blades or wings 5 and is provided with a central opening to receive the spindle or journal 2. The wings or blades are approximately arranged in a horizontal plane, and each has one side 6 curved and bent downwardly, whereby the dasher is rotated when the rod is reciprocated and the other side edge and the outer edge are bent upward to form flanges 7 and 8, which are provided with perforations 9, whereby air is forced through the cream when the dashers are vertically reciprocated and oppositely rotated. The blades or wings 5 of the upper and lower dashers are oppositely arranged that is to say, the side edges of the wings of the upper dasher are bent downward, While the correspondingedges of the lower dasher are bent upward to form flanges, whereby the dashers willbe rotated in opposite directions.
A sleeve 10 is interposed between the upper and lower dashers to maintain them the properdistance apart, and it is secured to the former. The lower dasher is provided with a sleevell, secured to it and extending upward therefrom and arranged within the depending sleeve of the upper dasher, whereby the dashers oppositely rotate without friction.
From the foregoing description and the ac companying drawings the construction, operation, and advantages of the invention will be readily understood.
hat I claim is 1. The combination, with a dasher-rod provided at its lower end with a journal, of the upper and lower dashers mounted thereon and constructed of suitable metal and composed each of four blades and each having its edges at one side bent downward and havin g its edges at the opposite side and end bent upward and forming flanges, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with a dasher-rod provided at its lower end with a journal, of the upper and lower dashers mounted thereon and constructed of sheet metal and composed of four blades having their edges at one side bent downward and their edges at the opposite side and outer end bent upward and forming flanges and provided with perforations, substantially as described.
3. The combination, with a dasher-rod provided at its lower end with a journal, of the upper and lower dashers mounted thereon and each constructed of sheet metal and consistingof the four wings or blades each having one side edge bent downward and the opposite side and end edges bent upward and forming flanges and provided with perforations, said dashers being oppositely or re- In testimony that I claim the foregoing as versely arranged, the depending sleeve semy own I have hereto affixed my signature in cured to the upper dasher and interposed bethe presence of two witnesses.
tween the same and the lower dasher and J. H. EDGERLY. the upwardly-extending sleeve secured to the WVitnesses:
