SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 536,084, dated August 18, 1896.
Application filed May 9, 1896. Serial No. 590,901. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, J EPTHA IV. MAT- THEWS and ROBERT S. MATTHEWS, citizens of the United States, residing at Wilson, in the county of Pike and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ghurns; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention has relation to churns; and the object is to provide a simple, cheap, and eifective device of this kind that will greatly facilitate the operation of making butter; and to this end the novelty consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts of the same, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings the same reference-numerals indicate like parts of the invention.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of our improved churn. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the cover removed. Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the line of the main driving-shaft. Fig. 4 is a similar view taken at a right angle to Fig. 3, and Fig. 5 is an enlarged perspective view of the pulleys and the detachable paddles.
2 is the main driving-shaft, and it is provided with journals 3 3, having their bearings in slots 4 4 in the diametrically opposite Walls of the churn 5, and 6 is a crank secured to one end of said shaft for rotating the same.
The slots 4 4 in the walls of the churn are vertically grooved, preferably V-shaped, 7, to receive the correspondingly-grooved slides 8 8, which fill up the slots 4 4when the shaft is in place.
A grooved driving-pulley 9 is mounted on the shaft 2, and a belt 10 connects it with a similar though smaller pulley 12 on the counter-shaft 13, located in the churn immediately below and transverse or at a right angle to the main shaft 2, its ends being journaled in bearing-blocks 14 14, secured to the inside of the walls of the churn by thumb-screws 15 15, passing through the orifices 29, located in the opposite walls from the outside, so that the said bearing-blocks and the shaft 13 may be conveniently removed for the purpose of cleaning the parts mentioned and the interior of the churn, leaving no corners or crevices in which the cream could lodge, become sour, and taint the cream or butter. Two or more sets of these orifices 29 are located in the same vertical line, one above the other, so that the bearing-blocks 14 may be adjusted in difierent planes to correspond to the quantity of cream it is desired to churn, and while this arrangement necessitates using a longer or shorter belt, as the case may be, we prefer to construct the belt 10 of coiled spring-wire, which may be suitably silver or nickle plated,
and which will automatically adjust itself to whatever distance the shaft 13 may be set from the main shaft 2.
The pulley 12 is provided with radial tongueand-groove slots 16 on each side thereof, extending from the periphery to the shaft, and near their upper end is a recess 17, which catches the end 18 of a spring-blade 19, se cured to the longitudinal tongue 20 of the removable wing or paddle 21, and when the tongue-of the paddle is slipped in the slot the end of the spring 19 catches in the recess 17 and prevents the accidental loosening of the blade; but by inserting the point of a knife or a nail in the cut-away portion 22 of the pulley 12, the end 18 of the springblade 19 to press the end outward from the recess 17, the blade can be readily removed for the purpose of cleaning, as above mentioned. Four of these slots are formed on one side of the pulley and four on the other side, so that there are eight wings on the pulley, those on one side being located between those on the other, and this construction enables the wings or paddles to thoroughly agitate the cream and greatly facilitate the operation of churning, greatly lessening the time and labor required.
I The larger pulley 9 is provided with a series of radial tongue-and-groove slots 23, recesses 24, cut-away portion 25, and radial removable paddles 26, having tongues 27 'anda spring-blade 28, exactly similar to the construction mentioned for the smaller pulley 12, and as the contiguous peripheries of the pulleys, and consequently their paddles, revolve in opposite directions and at a right angle to mounted on said counter-shaft 13 and having radial slots 16, each having a recess-17, and the removable Wings or paddles 21, each having a longitudinal tongue 20 and a springblade 19, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
