G. GIBSON.
- SASH PASTENER. No. 473,390.
Patented Apr. 19, 1892 firrzey.
UNITED STATES.
PATENT QFFICE.
GEROLT GIBSON, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
SASH-FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 473,390, dated April 19, 1892.
Application filed August 22, 1891- Serial No, 403,455. (No model.) I
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I,.GEROLT GIBSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window-Sash Locks; and I do declare the following tobe a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has for its object, first, to prevent the rattling of window-sashes, and, second, to lock the upper sash, so as to prevent its beinglowered, thelockin g of the two sashes to prevent rattling being automatic upon the parts of the device coming together in' closing the window, while the locking of the upper sash, so as to prevent its being lowered, is not automatic, and this device is intended for use in connection with a suitable lock for locking the lower sash wheuclosed.
In carrying out my invention I proceed as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, and in which Figures 1 and 2 are views in elevation of my window-sash look as applied in position. Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are views in detached detail of the'several parts composing my lock.
My window-sash lock is composed, essentially, of three parts of novel configuration, the part L being attached to the top of the meeting-rail of the lower sash, the part D embedded flush with the face of the side rail of the upper sash near the meeting-rail, and the part Aefixed to the vertical bead that separates the two sashes. The part Lhas a hook end WV, that when the parts of the lock are in iheir locked position engages a lug B of the part A.
B is a lug formed on the member A and similar in contour to the lug B, and these lugs B and B have curved edges N and G, respectively, and are separated by a slot 0, for a purpose as will presently appear.
The member D is a rectangular frame, with in which is arranged to slide a bolt H, having a finger depression land laterally-projecting lug K, and at one corner a lug E, with curved uppersurface F.
The curved surfaces N and G of the lugsB and B of the part A of the lock are adapted to fit, respectively, the curved surface F of the lug E of the member D and beneath the hook end W of part L, and the slot 0 of part A is to receive the lug K of the bolt II.
To look the sashes of the window to prevent theirrattling, supposing the two sashes to be slightly separated, as in Fig. 1, upon raising the upper sash the lugE is brought in engagement with the lug B of the immovable member A of the lock, and by reason of the curved engaging surfaces of said lugs the top sash is drawn toward the lower sash. Now upon lowering the lower sash the hook end IV of the member L engages the lug B and the said lower sash is similarly drawn toward the uppersash. Thus the two meeting-rails of the window are brought together, and both of said sashes being locked to an immovable part of the window-frame rattling of said sashes is prevented. To lock the top sash, so as to prevent its being lowered, the bolt H is shot so that the lug K will enter the slot 0 of the member A, as in Fig. 2. The upper sash cannot, therefore, be lowered until the said bolt is Withdrawn.
Having thus described my, invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- The window-sash lock described, composed of the member L, with hook end WV, secured to the top of themeeting-rail of thelower sash, the member A, with lugs B and B and slot 0, secured to the vertical dividing-bead of the window-frame, and the member D, with lug E F and sliding bolt H K, all constructed and arranged to operate substantially as and for the purposes specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
. GEROLT GIBSON.
