PEG FOR VIOLINS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO. 473,347, dated April 19, 1892.
Application filed January 21, 1892. Serial No. 418,737. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. ROWE, of Bel ton, in the county of Bell and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pegs for Violins and other Stringed Musical Instruments, of which the following is a a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to an improvement in pegs or pins for violins, guitars, banjos, pianofortes, and other stringed musicalinstruments, and has for its object to dispense with the usual string-aperture in the peg and to so construct the peg that a string may be expeditiously, conveniently, and securely attached thereto and as readily and conveniently removed therefrom, as desired, and to accomplish these objects without disfiguring the peg.
The invention consists in the novel construction of the key, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth, andpointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings,forminga part of this specification, in which similar figures and letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the key having the improvement applied thereto; and Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken, practically, on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
In carrying out the invention, the keyA is of the usual or may be of any approved construction but in one side thereof an angular channel or slot B is produced, the said channel extending, preferably, from a predetermined point on the periphery of the key transversely or diametrically thereof downward in a diagonal direction to a point at or near the center of the key, from which the channel extends horizontally in a reverse direction, as is best shown in Fig. 1. Thus the channel in its general contour is somewhat triangular, comprising two sections or members-namely, a diagonal section or member 10 and a horizontal section or member 11, the former extending transversely and the other longitudinally of the key. The outer member of the slot. however, may be disposed at any other disired angle to the inner member-as, for instance, that shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. Therefore I do not limit myself to the exact inclination shown and described.
It is obvious that a string when introduced into the outer member 10 of the slot or channel may be quickly carried downward and made to enter the inner member, and that when in this member of the channel the end of the string may be knotted to prevent its withdrawal, or the knot may be omitted and the key turned to wind the string around it in the customary manner, and that in either event a secure attachment of the string to the key will be effected, and the string, without difficulty and in an expeditious manner, may be removed from the key when occasion may demand.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. As an improved article of manufacture, a key for violins and other stringed musical instruments, said key being provided with an angular slot or channel produced in its side, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. A key for violins or other stringed musical instruments, having an angular slot or channel formed therein for the reception of a string, as and for the purpose set forth.
3. A key for violins or other stringed musical instruments, having a slot or channel produced therein, extending from a point upon its outer surface diagonally downward in direction of its center and thence practically in a horizontal and reverse direction, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
