Be it known that I, FRANK FOLEY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Vestteld, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Whips and Analogous Articles; and I do hereby declare` that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable i ro others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to improvements in the construction of whip-handles, canes, umbrella-handles, whip-sockets, and analogous articles.

In the manufacture of high-grade whips as heretofore generally produced the upper end or top of the core,whieh consists of a tapering rod or stick of any suitable material, is wound with linen, cotton, rubber, eel-skin, or other suitable material, forming a lining therefor, over which a covering of cotton,silk, or other strands is braided by machinery. The butt of the' handle is generally provided with a covering of leather or other material, the joint between it and the plaited portion being concealed by a ring or button of metal, paper, &c.

The object of my invention is to improve upon the prior constructions of such articles; and it consists, essentially, in a whip-handle the upper end of the core of which is wound with the tanned throat-pipe of a calf or other animal,with a covering of plaited strands of cotton, silk, or other similar materials, and a butt-covering of the seamless tanned Windpipe or alimentary tube or throat-pipe of an animal, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a longitudinal sectional view of a whip-handle made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, the. braided covering at the upper end thereof being removed to show the lining. Fig. 3 is aview of the butt-covering detached.

In the said drawings the reference-numeral l designates the core of a whiphandle,which may be made of wood, rattan, or other mate- 5o rial, as usual. The numeral 2 denotes the lining at the top thereof,-which consists of a strip of the tanned throat-pipe of a calf or other animal spirally wound thereon. Over this lining strands of cotton, silk,or gut are braided by machineryin a manner well known to those skilled in the art. At its butt-end the core is formed with a series of parallel peripheral grooves and is provided with a covering 3, consisting of the seamless tanned wind-pipe or ali- 6o mentary tube of an animal,which is stretched on while in awet or moist condition,and when dry will firmly shrink upon and adhere thereto. This butt-covering extends up the core a short distance, and the joint between it and the braided covering is concealed by a ring or button 4, consisting of a short length of the seamless tanned wind-pipe or throat-pipe of the animal. This butt-tube is preferably corrugated, as seen in Fig. 2, whereby a firm 7o hold can be obtained.

The tanning of the Wind-pipe and the alimentary tube may be effected in any known manner and may be dyed orcolored, if desired.

In addition to whip-handles the invention is applicable to umbrella-handles, Whip-sockets, and other similar articles.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is As an'improved article, a whip-stock con- So sisting of a core Wound at its upper end with the tanned throat-pipe of an animal, abraided covering, the butt formed with a series of parallel peripheral grooves, the butt-covering consisting of the seamless tanned wind-pipe or alimentary tube ot' an animal stretched upon the butt and held thereon by frictional con-v tact, a series of grooves corresponding with those of the butt being formed thereon, and the seamless button, substantially'as described.
