CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters atent No. 472,509, dated April 5, 1892.
Application tiled December 15, 1891. Serial No. 415,166. (No model.)
To if/ZZ whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, GEORGE W. POWELL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pine Hill, in the county of Wilcox and lState of Alabama, have invented certain new and.
useful Improvements iii Car-Couplings; and .l do hereby declare that the followin gis a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in car-couplings, the object being to provide an improved device of this character which shall possess superior advantages with respect to simplicity of construction and efficiency in operation.
The invention consists, essentially, in a draw-bar having the usual flaring mouth with a downwardly extending or inclined recess in which is located a roller adapted to fall or roll by gravity toward the front end and be caught by a shoulder formed in the lower wall of the draw-bar. When in this position, the said roller is iii line with the aperture for the coupling-pin, so that the lower end of said pin will rest thereon and be retained in an elevated position. As the cars approach each other, the coupliiig-link will strike the roller, forcing it backward and allowing the pin to drop and engage with the link. Any suitable means may be employed to raise the pin. When the cars are uncoupled, the roller will again roll toward the front of the draw-bar and hold the coupling-pin in its raised position, as before stated.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents a view, partly in elevation and partly in sectioii,of the ends of two cars with my improved coupling' applied thereto. Fig. 2 is an elevation of a platform-car with my improvements applied thereto. Fig. 3 is a similar view of a passenger-car. Figwl is an end view of one of the cars shown in Fig. l.
In the said drawings, the reference-numeral 1 designates thecar-body and 2 the draw-bar provided with spring 3. The outer end of the draw-bar is provided with the' usual flaring mouth 4L and also with an inclined recess 5, in which is located a roller G, which is adapted to roll by gravity toward the front end of the recess and be caught and held by the shoulders 7 in the lower front part of the draw-bar.
The numeral 8 denotes the coupling-pin, having a head 9, adapted to be engaged by the bifurcated end of an arm 9, secured to a transverse rocking shaft l0, provided with operating-levers l2. These levers may be extended to the top of the car and may also be provided with liand-holds 13, so that they may be operated from the ground or from the top of car.
The operation will be readily understood. Vhen the coupling-pin is elevated by the arm 9, the roller will roll toward the front of the draw-bar and be caught and held by the slioulder-7. upon the roller, which is struck by the coupling-link 14 when the cars approach each other, forcing the roller backward and allowing the pin to drop and engage withthe link.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim is- Iii a car-coupler, the combination, with the draw-bar having a flaring mouth, an inclined recess and a shoulder, aligned apertures for the passage of a coupling-pin, and a gravity ball or sphere located in said recess, of the coupling-pin having a head, the transverse rock-shaft provided with a bifurcated aiin adapted to engage with the head of said p in, and a pivoted operating-lever connected with said shaft, substantially as described.
In testimony that l claim the foregoing as my own l have hereunto affixed iny signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE lV. POVELL.
Witnesses:
1V. F. SHEEFIELD, T. C. SHEEEIELD.
The lower end of the pin will now restv
