CAR-COUPLING.
-SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 349,400, dated September 21, 1886.
v Application filed June 26, 1886. Serial No.5l0G,348. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ISAAC MITCHELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Voodbine, in the county of Harrison and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Car-Couplings, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in car-couplings; and itconsists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices, that will be more fully set forth hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, Figure l is aside elevation of a car-coupling embodying my improvements. Fig.2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a top plan view. Fig. 4 is a detached plan view of the keeper for the operating-rod.
A' represents the draw-head, which is provided with the enlarged outwardly flared mouth B to receivethe coupling-link. Th rough the center of the draw-head, in rear of the mouth, is made avertical longitudinal slot,
O. The upper side of the draw-head,near the mouth, is thickened, as at D, and through the said draw-head, near the mouth and in front ofthe slot 0, is avertical transverse slot, E.
F represents an arm, the lower portion of which is in the slot 0. The lower end of this arm is pivoted to the under side of the drawhead by means of a transverse pin, G, which is journaled in keepers H, that are secured to the under side of the draw-head. From the upper end of the arm F, on the front side thereof, projects a stud, f.
I represents a eoupling-pin,which fits in the slot-E, and is provided near its center with a transverse horizontal opening,K. On the rear side of the coupling-pin is a vertical groove, L,which extends from the opening K nearly to the top of the coupling-pin.
M represents a spring, which is secured in the upper rear side of' the slot (3 and bears against the rear side of the pivoted arm F, so as to inove'the upper end of the latter forwardly and cause the stud f of the said arm to engage the groove L on the rear side of the coupling-pin.
Nrepresents the usual coupling-link, which is adapted to enter the draw-head.
\Vhen the coupling pin is raised to the position shown in Fig. 2, the stud f engages the opening K, and thus supports the coupling-pin in its elevated. position. When the cars come together, the coupling-link enters the draw-head and strikes against the front side of the pivoted arm F, and forces the said arm rearwardly against the tension of the spring M, thus causing the stud f to disengage the opening K and release the coupling-pin, which then drops by its own gravity and passes through the link, thus coupling the cars together automatically. I
In order to raise the coupling-pin from the top of a freight-car, I provide a vertical rod, 0, which is provided near its upper end on one side with a feather or spline, 1?, which passes through a keeper, R, that is secured on the end of the car. The said keeper is provided with a slot, S, through which the spline and the main portion of the rod pass, and the rod is provided at the upper end of the spline with an enlarged collar, 0, and slightly below the lower end of the spline with a similar collar, 0 'The lower end of the rod is attached to the upper end of the coupling-pin by means of a chain, T.
If it be desired to permit two cars to come together without coupling, the rod 0 is drawn upwardly, so as to raise the coupling-pin, and the said rod is then partly turned, sov as to cause the spline to pass out of line with the slot S and bear upon the upper side of the keeper B. This supports the rod 0, and therefore the coupling-pin, in an elevated position, so that when the cars come together the couplinglink The combination of the draw-head having the vertical slot 0 and the vertical opening E, the arm F, having its lowerend pivoted in the slot 0, and provided with the stud f at its upper end, the spring M, bearing against the rear side of the arm, and the coupling-pin having the opening K near its center to engage the stud f, and the groove L, extending vertically from the opening K, substantially as described.
In testimeny that I chin] the ibreg'oing sis my own I have hereto affixe'd my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
ISAAC MITCHELL. WVitnesses:
JAMES H. BIRD, C. W. SCOFIELD.
