Description
(No Model) 7 R. A. MARSHALL. OLEVIS.
.No. 472,132. I Patented Apr. 5, 1892.
a??? gmmnumlmmu NiTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RICHARD ALMON MARSHALL, OF RUSSELLVILLE, KENTUCKY.
CLEVIS.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 472,132, dated April 5, 1892. Application tiled January 23, 1892. Serial No. 419,052. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, RICHARD ALMON MAR- sHALL,acitizen of the United States, residing at Russellville, in the county of Logan and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Olevis, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates toimprovements in clevises for plows; and the objects in view are to provide a cheap and simple, strong, and durable clevis, to which the doubletree may be readily attached in an adjustable manner and without the employment of the usual clevis-ring.
With the above objects in View the invention consists in certain features of construction hereinafter specified, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective of a clevis constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section. Figs. 3 and 4 are details in perspective of the right and left clevis-sections, the same being separated. Fig. 5 shows the draft- 1n. p Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawings.
The clevis consists of right and left' members or sections, which have a general U shape. Each of the members comprises at its front end a beveled clevis-jaw 1, having a series of perforations 2, the two series being transversely opposite each other. The right member is provided at the juncture of its terminals 3 with the jaw 1 thereof and upon their inner sides With shoulders or lugs 4 and at their edges are provided with angular recesses 6. The terminals 3 are further provided with a pair of bolt-openings 7 and 8. The left member has its terminals 9somewhat closer together than the terminals 3 of the opposite member and are adapted to take between the same. The terminals 9 are provided with bolt- openings 10 and 11, which register with the openings 7 and 8, and the two sets of openings receive front and rear pins or bolts 12 and 13, respectively, each of which terminates at its upper end in a Wrenchreceiving head or jaw. The terminals 9 at their outer sides and at their juncture with the jaw at the left section are provided with shoulders 14, which take into the recesses 6 of the terminals 3, and at their inner edges the terminals 9 have recesses 15, which receive the shoulders or lugs4 of the terminals 3. In this manner the two sections composing the clevis interlock and are maintained in their interlocked position by the vertical pins or bolts 12 and 13.
15 designates a transverse draft pin or bolt, the ends of which are reduced, as at 16, to take .into the perforations 2 of the two jaws. With this pinthe D connection of a singletree directly engages.
17 designates an ordinary plow-stock, 18 the standard, and 19 the handles.
It will be seen that the draft pin or bolt may be adjusted toany of the pairs of holes formed in the clevis, it being simply necessary to remove the front bolt 12, slightly separate the jaws, remove the pin or bolt 15 and readjust the same in any of the other openings, and relock the clevis-sections.
From the foregoing description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that I have provided an easily-manufactured, strong, and durable clevis, in which the doubletree is readily adjustable and securely locked when in position.
Having described my invention, what I claim is=- I 1. The herein-described clevis, consisting of the opposite U-shaped sections, each of which is provided at its front end with a beveled and perforated jaw and at its rear end with terminals, thoseof one section embracing those of the other, locking-bolts passed through the two sections, and a draft-bolt passed through the perforations of the jaws, substantially as specified.
2. The hereindescribed clevis, the same consisting of the opposite U -shaped sections, each having a'front'beveled perforated jaw and rearwardly-disposed terminals, those of the left section being embraced by those of the right, the terminals of the left section being provided at their inner ends with the re cesses 15 and at their outer sides with the shoulders 14 and those terminals of the right section being provided at their inner sides with the shoulders 4, fitting in the recesses 15, and at their inner edges with recesses 6, receiving the lugs 14, the pin 15, having the reduced ends 16 reinovably mounted in the perforations of the jaws, and the locking- bolts 12 and 13, mounted in front of the rearperforations formed in the terminals, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in 10 the presence of two witnesses.
RICHARD ALMON MARSHALL.
