Description
`Nrrizn STATES VILLIAM ARRONQUIER, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN STAGING FOR BUILDINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent- No. 47, E79, dated April 11,1865.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM ARnoNQUiER, ot' Worcester, State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in the Construction of Staging Used for the Erectirn of Buildings, &c.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part ot' this specitieation, in which like numbers indicate like parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved staging ready for use. Fig. 2 is a plan of the portable apparatus attached to one ladder. Fig. 3 is a sectional side elevation, taken hrou gh the center or" the ladder and apparatus attached thereto.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved method of constructing staging for the use ot' masons, painters, &c., when erecting or repairing buildings without the use ot' n ills and the ordinary appl'anees now used tor that purpose, and which is destructive to the material by constantly nailing up and t-aring down, and ot'ten rendered weak and insecure and perilous to the lives of those working upon it.
r1`he principle of my invention is the secure ment ot' a portable apparatus to the rounds of a common ladder or ladders capable of being easily raised and lowered, and upon which the ordinary planking or platform can be rested on the ladders, serving as a means of as scent up to and from them, the whole forming a portable staging, which can be taken down and re-erected easily and expeditiously, as l will now proceed to describe.
Fig. 1 is a perspective view ot' my arrangement. Two ladders, 1 1, are shown elevated and placed against a building in the ordinary manner at a suitable distance apart. Attiched near the titth round of the ladder from the ground (as shown) by hook-bolts 2 2, hooking upon bar 3 and screwed up by nuts upon cross bar 5, rise the two standards 6 6, one from each cheek of the ladder, which meet and are secured by a bolt, 7, at the outer end ofthe horizontal bar 8, its extremity resting upon and being attached by a hook-bolt, 9, to one of the upper rounds of the ladder. A cross-bolt, 10, is passed through the standards. Upon this rod or bolt rests another bar, 15, similar to the one described, and is secured thereto by a hook-bolt, 11. The other end of the bar is sustained by a rod, 12, hooked on the second round from the top of the ladder 13. The center ofthe bar is supported on a round of the ladder by hook-bolt 4.. The end of the bar can be raised or lowered by a nut, 14. A similar apparatus is attached to the other ladder consisting of the horizontal l-ars, &c. A plank, 16, of suitable length, is laid upon the two upper horizontal bars in front of the ladder, and another plank, 17, is placed upon the two lower bars between the ladder' and the building, thus forming two stagings at different elevations.
It will be seen, particularly by Fig. 2, which is a sectional elevation taken through the center ofthe ladder and apparatus, that the up per and lower planking'are close to the building, and may be raised or lowered by attaching the apparatus to different rounds of the ladders. r1`he standards which rise from the foot ot' the ladder to the horizontal bars can be adjusted by a series of holes at the top ends.
Fig. 2 is a plan of one of the ladders with the apparatus attached. -By unloosening the hook-bolts 2 2 from the bar 3 and the hookbolt 9 from the top round of the ladder, and unhooking the rod l2 from round 13, the apparatus is detached, and can be folded into a small compass for transportation and re-adj usted at pleasure.
Having thus fully described my invention, what l claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The construction of the supporting bars and platform and their combination with the ladders, forming a staging, as described.
XVM. ARRONQUIER.
