P l P E Q SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 471,775, dated March 29, 1892. Application filed November 14, 1891. Serial No. 411,872. (No model.)

-To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES SCHLEI, aeitizen of the United States, and a resident of VBrillion, in the county of Calumet, and in the State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipes; and I do hereby declare that the `following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.

The object of my invention is to provide stovepipe-sections having adjustable joints at one or both ends thereof, so that they can be very readily and firmly put together, and thereby do away with the difficulty heretofore experienced in connecting the Sections in the manner common to the art to which my invention relates.

My invention therefore consists in certain peculiar and novel features of construction and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described, with reference to the accompanyingdrawings, and subsequently claimed.

In the drawings, Figurel represents a side elevation of the ends of two stovepipe-sections, one of the latter being provided with a joint constructed according to Iny invention; and Fig. 2', a section 011 line 2 2 of the preceding figure.

Referring by letter to the drawings, A B represent the ends of two stovepipe-sections, the section A being seamed in the ordinary manner for a suitable distance of its length and then slitted circumferentially for a certain distance to form fiaps a. The latter, instead of being formed with the ordinary seam-folds, as is the case with the longitudinal edges of the remainder of said pipe-section, are left plain, so as to overlap each other.

Suitably secured to the fiaps a, at a suitable distance from the edges thereof, are ears b, connected by a screw-bolt c, having a n ut From the construction and arrangement of parts above described it will be seen that in putting the two pipe-Sections A B together one end of the latter pipe-section is inserted in the opposing end of the former section,

,and then upon tightening the screw-bolt c the fiaps a will be drawn together, to thereby clamp both pipe-Sections in place, as shown When desired to remove the section B, the screw-bolt c is loosened, causing the fiaps a to relax and enabling said section B to be readily withdrawn from the opposing section. Although I have shown and described the flaps a as being integral with the pipe-section A, it will be understood that the same may be suitably shaped and otherwise secured to said pipe-section without departure 'from the spirit of my invention. It will also 'be understood that, although I have shown and described my joint in connection with stovepipes, it is equally as applicable to various other pipes.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to seeure by Letters Patent` is- 1. A pipe-section provided with a circumferential slit through a portion 'of its periphery adjacent to the end thereof, the remainder of the pipe-section being seamed in the ordinary manner, but the end portion being left free, with the seaming edges thereof overlapping, ears attached to said free end portions, and a screw-bolt connecting said ears, substantially as set forth.

2. As an improved article of manufacture, a stovepipe-section seamed in the ordinary manner for a suitable distance of its length and then slitted circumferentially lfor a certain distance to form end flaps, ears secured to the fiaps, and a screw-bolt for engagement With the ears, substantially as set forth.
