SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent NO. 471,567, dated March 29, 1892.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that we, WILLIAM H. PALMER and WILLIAMI-I.DANIEL,citizensoftheUnited States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvementsin Guards orShields for Stallions, of which the following isa full description, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 shows the device applied to a stallion. Fig. 2is alongitudinal vertical section of the guard or shield, the attaching-straps being broken away. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the guard or shield, the attachingstraps being broken away; and Fig. 4 is a detail, being a top or plan view of the back-pad to which the shield-supporting straps are attached.

Ourinvention relates to a device for use with stallions for the prevention of masturbation, as hereinafter more fully described. That which We claim as new will be pointed out in the claims.

In. the drawings, A represents the guard or shield,which may be made of india-rubber or of other suitable material. We prefer to use india-rubber,-as this'material is easily molded into the desired shape, is impervious to fluids, and is more readily cleansed. The guard or shield A is approximately triangular in shape, and the edges a are turned up on each side to. give it somewhat of a dish shape.

The guard or shield A is formed with its forward end A turned up at right angles, or nearly so, with the body of the guard, so as to form a front wall, against which the penis V shield A. The metal plate C is attached to points 0 upon its upper and inner surface, located upon each side of the opening B and toward the forward portion of the shield. The upwardlyprojecting portion A is provided with points 0, projecting backward from its rear or inner surface. The points cc may be molded around metallic pins, as is best shown in Fig. 2, when the shield or guard is formed of india-rubber or they may be formed in any suit-able manner.

The strap D may be bifurcated to form a tail-piece D, or the tail-piece may be formed of independent straps secured to the strap D. The strap D and tail-pieceD may be made of india-rubber, leather, or any other suitable material. I

In use the shield or guard is attached to the animal as is shown in Fig. 1. The opening '13 in the guard or shield A is of such size and comes in such a position when the guard or shield is put upon the animal that the penis of the stallion may be extended downward through the opening in urinating. If, however, the member is further protruded and thrown up, it will come in contact with the teeth or points I) of the plate '0 and will be instantly withdrawn, thus preventing masturbation. In case the animal extends the member forward or to either side within the shield it will come in contact with the points 0 or c", causing the immediate withdrawal of the member and preventing masturbation.

The shield or guard above. described is simple and effective, is easily and quickly removed or put on, is readily cleansed, and, inasmuch as the shield is provided with an opening through which the animals penis may pass when the animal desires to urinate, the

What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The shield or guard A, having its forward end A turned up and provided with the points a c and having an opening B for the passage of the penis, substantially as described.

2. The combination, with a shield or guard A, provided with points 0 0' upon its upper surface and having the opening B for the passage of the penis, of a plate 0, provided with a similar-shaped opening, substantially as described.

3. A stallion-shield having an upturned end A and an ovoid-shaped penis-opening having laterally-projecting pins hen the edges of its narrowing portion, substantially as described.
