To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, HERBERT E. DAVIDSON, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Drawers for Holding Index-Cards, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.

This invention has for its object to improve drawers or boxes to contain cards for usein libraries and other places where cards are used for the purpose of indexing.

In accordance with my invention the box or drawer to receive the cards is provided with a rod, which is extended through one end of the drawer and through holes in the cards, the said rod being provided with threads or projections to engage the threaded interior of a bushing let into the end. of the drawer, the said bushing being threaded, preferably, externally to be screwed into the end of the drawer, the bushingbeing securely held in place in the endpiece.

Figure 1 shows part of a box or drawer embodying my invention, the rear end and onehalf the box or drawer being broken away, the figure showing some cards in place and part of the follower-block. Fig. 2 shows part of the front end of the drawer and the threaded bushing, and Fig. 3 shows the key to lock the bushing.

The box or drawer D, composed of wood, has in practice four sides or ends and a bottom piece, the drawings, Fig. 1, representing the drawer as in longitudinal section, the rear end of the drawer being also broken off. The follower E is a loose block resting in the drawer and adapted to back up the cards F. The front end of the drawer has inserted or screwed into it a bushing 0, preferably of metal and threaded both externally and internally, and, as shown, one end of the bushing has a screw-driver notch 0, into which to enter a screw-driver by which to turn the bushing into place in the drawer. The cardholding rod B has a threaded portion B and next it a head A, the threaded portion entering the, bushing and engaging its internal threads when the rod B has been inserted to pass through holes in the cards and enter and preferably pass through the follower. The engagement of the threaded part of the holding-rod with the bushing prevents any accidental withdrawal or removal of the rod wood-work, I have provided a plate b, which is held in place by a suitable screw 1), onehalf the said plate being shown in Fig. 1.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A box or drawer for the reception of cards and an internally-threaded bushing, combined with a card-holding rod having a threaded portion at or near one end to engage the interior of the bushing and confine the rod in place, the remainder of said rod being smooth to pass through the cards, substantially as described;

2. A box or drawer and the bushing threaded externally and internally, externally to be turned into the end of the box or drawer and having a tool-receiving notch in one end, whereby it may be turned, combined with a card-holding rod provided with a threaded part to engage the internal threads of the bushing, substantially as described.

3. A box or drawer and the bushing threaded externally and internally, externally to be turned into the end of the box or drawer, combined with a card-holding rod provided with a threaded part to engage the internal threads of the bushing and with a wear or finish plate interposed between the head of the rod and the front end of the box or drawer, substantially as described.

4. A box or drawer and the bushing threaded externally and internally, externally to be turned into the end of the box or drawer, combined with a card-holding rod provided with a threaded part to engage the internal threads of the bushing and with a bushinglocking device, as g, to operate substantially as described.
