FRANK PAGI-IINGER, F CLEVELAND, OIIIO, ASSIGNOR OF FORTY-FIVE. ONE HUN- DREIDTI-IS TO FRANK LUKAN, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
FILING DEVICE FOR INDEX-PAPERS.
' To all whom it may concern: I
the like, and the invention consists in a de-' vice comprising a box, drawer or the like and a sliding follower or compress member of novel and original construction substantially as shown and described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a box or drawer with a portion of one side broken away to disclose the follower therein. Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional elevation of the box or drawer and cross section of the follower, and F 8 is a cross section of the drawer.
As thus shown the invention consists broadly in the box or drawer D and follower or compress memberG. The drawer in this instance is of rectangular shape with greater length than width and of a'suitable depth for certain sizes of papers or cards or the like to be filed therein, but, obviously, the shape and size of the box or drawer may be varied according to the contents to be kept therein and may be made of wood or metal or other suitable material and adapted to any preferred style of cabinet or casing. However, whatever the style or fashion of the drawer as such it is incomplete without a slot, channel or guideway 2 lengthwise in its bottom between its ends, or, in other words extending from front to rear. In this instance the construct-ion employed consists of a slot 2 open through the bottom and center of the drawer with a shallow channel 3 outside running along both sides of said slot as seen in Fig. 3 and adapted to accommodate a slide plate or piece 4. I
The follower C is a double-sided member, having a main front part 5 and a rear sustaining part 6, and a bowed spring S of approximately U shape unites said parts operatively together. The said slide 4 beneath the drawer is connected with said spring through or by means of a screw or bolt 8, which passes through said plate and slot 2 Specification of Letters Patent.

into the bend of the spring and operatively connects said parts.
The said spring is fashioned preferably out of suitable spring steel, and besides being provided centrally in its bend with a threaded hole for screw 8 has other threaded holes in its respective ends or arms a and 6 through which it is secured to the sides of said follower sides or parts 5 and 6 by screws 9. The spring S is comparatively wide so that a single sprin will provide all the hinge connection and support the said follower requires to'hold .the sides thereof in working relations with each other and with the drawer. true by reason of the fact that said follower parts or sections extend the full width of ,the inside of the drawer and are of greater depth in this instance than the drawer while they'restdirectly upon the bottom of the :drawer at their lower edges. =memberor part 6, however, has a rubber 'heel or strip 10 on its edge engaging on the This is The brace floor of the drawer and serving to make a locking engagement therewith to prevent possible slipping or sliding of the follower when it is under more or less heavy pressure from the front or against member 5.
Normally the parts hold the relation say as seen in Fig. 2 and are locked therein through spring .S, the screw 8 becoming the fulcrum point of the follower both for locking it in adjusted position and for shifting it to such position. Thus, suppose the front of the drawer to be packed full of cards or the like which press backward against the face of front follower member 5. With the fulcrum at 8 and the spring arm a bent back accordingly there would be an upward tightening pull on bolt 8 and a back pres sure on arm I) of the spring and proportionate down pressure on the rubber heel 10 with consequent locking effect at all points. There'can be no sliding or slipping of the portion for these reasons, however hard the back pressure may be upon the face of mem her 5. But if adjustment of the partition be desired it is easily effected by gripping the members 5 and 6 across their edges between the thumb and forefinger, Fig. 2, and pressing them toward each other at their edges so as to release the lower edges of said members from the bottom of the drawer. The screw 8 becomes the fulcrum of movement also in this operation, and when the said parts are gripped and pressed inward CIX to free them from the bottom of the drawer it is easy to slide the partition back or forth to any position desired.
The spring action alone is suflicient to lock the follower against possible sliding in the drawer, but when its arms are pressed toward each other they operate as levers to lift the members 5 and 6 off their engaging edges. Then an easy horizontal movement of the partition is possible with the screw 8 and plate 4 as bottom guides. Having the bend of the spring come fairly near to the bottom of the drawer rather facilitates this movement or adjustment. Qtherwise said spring might be higher up on screw 8.
The main or front member 5 of the follower is shown as recessed on its rear and top to accommodate the top edge of the rear member 6, under the shoulder 0 thereon and this serves to make a brace of the rear member for the front member under severe back pressure. This follower therefore is pe culiar in that it is formed of two separate parts united by a spring and one part serving as a brace and lock for the other.
hat I claim is:
l. A filing receptacle having a slot lengthwise in its bottom, in combination with a follower therein consisting of two parts and a U shaped spring interposed between the said parts and having a hole centrally in its bend, a slidable part on the outside of said slot and a pin engaged with said part and in said hole in the spring and operatively connecting the parts.
2. A filing drawer having a slot lengthwise through its bottom, a two-part follower and a U shaped spring uniting said parts and having its bend next over said slot, a slide beneath said slot and a screw connecting the same through said slot with said spring, and the rear member of the said follower provided with a clinging substance on its engaging edge adapted to hold said member by contact with the surface of the floor in any adjusted position, the said parts of the follower being constructed to engage one with the other at their top portions.
3. A filing drawer having a slot through its bottom, in combination with a follower consisting of two opposed parts having flat sides and extending across said drawer from side to side, a spring uniting said parts and means slidably connecting the said spring through said slot with the under side of the drawer, one of said parts of the follower having a shoulder along its top and rear and the other of said parts having a top edge adapted to engage beneath said shoulder and serve as a brace.
4. A filing drawer of rectangular shape having a flat bottom and a slot lengthwise through the same, in combination with a follower consisting of two fiat sided parts substantially the full width of said drawer and resting on the bottom thereof, a U shaped spring uniting the sides of said follower, a slidable plate beneath the bottom of said drawer and a screw through said plate and slot engaged in the bend of said spring.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANK PACHINGER.
