JOI-IN BIRD, OF WARREN, ILLINOIS.
GATE# LATCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 470,539, dated March 8, 1892.
Application filed October 7, 1891. Serial No. 408,037. (No model.) v
as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains ,to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to' animprovement in gate-fasteners; and it consists in the particular construction and arrangement of parts, which will be fully described hereinafter, and particularly referred to in the claims.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple fastener for sliding and swinging gates, which can be applied to any ordinary gatepost, which is so constructed that it will prevent the gate from being opened untilit is operated, and which will also prevent the gate from being raised by animals.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view ofone of my fasteners complete. Fig. 2 is a view showing theinvention applied.
A indicates a gate-post, which is provided with a transverse opening that is bored therein in any convenient manner. My invention is applied to this opening, which forms a bearing or hinge therefor. This hanger consists of two L-shaped castings D, which have the lateral portions of the L made hollow forthe reception of a tie-bolt E. These lateral portions F are provided, respectively, with apro-l jection b and anopening f for the reception of the said projection b. In this manner the parts are secured together by means of the tie-bolt E, and interlock so that they both turn together, as will be readily understood. The obj ect of having the two parts constructed to be separated is so that they can beplaced in the transverse opening in the gate-post from either side after the tie-bolt is removed, and then the tie-bolt passed through them and the two parts clamped firmly together. A pin G passes transversely through the gate, upon which the outer free ends of the castings rest when they are turned down upon each side ofthe gate, as shown in Fig. 2. EX-
tending downward from the outer ends of the two castingsD are the projections I, which rest just outside of the pin G, and thus will lock a sliding gate against being opened, and will prevent a gate from being raised by hogs or other animals by catching behind the said pin, as will be readily understood. Ears or projections L extend laterally from the sides of the outer ends of the said castings for convenience in raising the said fastener from either side of the gate by affording ahand or finger hold. When the fastening is turned upward, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, just a little past the vertical line, it will so remain until the gate is closed and the fastener again turned downward.
By means of the above construction I produce a gate-fastener which is very simple in construction, and yet very effective in operation. It will prevent the gate from being pushed sidewise to any great extent and will prevent a hinged or other gate from being raised and a sliding gate from being pushed open.
The device is simple and cheap to manufacture, and can be applied to any ordinary gate-post.
While I have described my invention as especially adapted for application to gates, I do not desire to limit myself to this use, for it will be readily understood that the same fastening can be used with convenience for fastening th doors of out or other buildings in the same manner that it is used for securing agate Without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, I claiml. A gate -fastener consisting of two L- shaped portions having the lateral portion of their L made hollow, and a tie-bolt passed IOO said L-shaped portions provided with doWnverse portion, by rneans of which the hanger Wardly-extending projections, and a tie-bolt is lifted, substantially as specified. 1o which is passed through the said hollow por- In testimony whereof I afX mysignaturein tions, substantially as specified. presence of two Witnesses.
4. A gate-fastener consisting of a U -shaped JOHN BIRD. hanger having its parallel portions provided Witnesses: with downwardly-extending projections I, and HENRY R. LoVlN, horizontal projections L in front of the trans- W. P. BALLARD.
