SPRING FOR BEDS, CUSHIONS, 84c.
SPECIFICATIONforming part of Letters Patent No. 470,472, dated March 8, 1892.
Application filed September 19, 1891. Serial lie. 406.213. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that we, EDWARD D. CHIPMAN and EDWARD L. D. FOSTER,- b0th citizens of the United States, and residents of Goshen, in
the county 'of Elkhart and State of Indiana,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination-Springs for Beds, Cushions, &c.; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon; which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a top plan view. Fig. 2 is an end View, and Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section.
This invention has relation to springs for beds, cushions, sofas, chair-seats, &c.; and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement thereof, as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the invention, the letterA designates the frame, which may be rectangular or of any other desired shape, to each side piece of which is secured a series of springs B. These springs consists each of a wire secured at each end to the side piece a short distance from each other. The end portions are then each formed into a coil 1), the intermediate portion being extended upwardly to form the loop 0. The coils b b of the springs all liein the same line and have passed therethrough a longitudinal rod D, serving to stiffen the springs and to give them a uniform connected action. The
coils b b are so formed that when the loops 0 are depressed their tension will be increased.
F F represent a series of transversely-extending coil-springs, connected at each end to the rods d, one for each end of the springs These springsF F consist each of a single spiral coil and are arranged in arc form, having their greatest elevation at the transverse center. Near each end each spring F has one of its coils intersected by the forward end of the loop 0. Instead of the coil-sprin g a band or other. suitable spring may be employed and connected to the springs B, so as to give them a combined action.
By varying the shape and size of the frame it is evident that the springs may be employed for use in all kinds of upholstering, or where a spring-cushion of seat is desired, as well as in beds.
Having described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The'combination, with the frame having at each side a series of springs secured thereto, each spring having a coil near each end and its intermediate portion formed into a loop, and the bar or rod passed through said coils, of the springs connected at each end to one of said rods and one of said loops, substantially as specified.
2. The c0mbinati0n,with the frame having the series of springs at each side secured thereto, said springs having each end coils and an intermediate looped portion, and longitudinal rods passed through the coils in each series, oft-he transverse springs connected at each end to one of said rods, each said transverse spring having one of its coils near each end intersected by the loopedportion of one of said side springs, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two Witnesses.
