FOOT-RAIL FOR COUNTERS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 470,348, dated March 8, 1892.

Application filed November 7, 1891. Serial No. 411,167. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern,.-

Be it known that I, AUGUST H. HERZOG,

of Mishavvaka, in the county of St. Joseph.

and the like with rails for the convenience of 1 persons standing in front to support one or both the feet, This rail is eight orten inches above the floor and about the same in front of the counter. This rail cannot be efficiently supported by brackets attached solely to the front of the counter because of the difficulty of so securely fastening the brackets to the front of the coun/'ter that the pressure of the feet Will not cause said fastenings to become loose. For that reason said rail is commonly supported from the oor, and when so supported the posts are in the Way when sweeping or Washing the ioor. I am aware that to obviate this objection the rail has been provided with a foot to rest on the floor and an arm hinged to the front of the counter, or a short bracket projecting therefrom, so that when the floor is to be cleansed therail and its several supporting-feet may be raised up, turning upward and backward on said joints and leaving the floor clear to the base of the counter. This device is objectionable because it makes it necessary to move the rail as an enti-rety and because it cannot be operated in that way around corners or in other than straight lines and moderate lengths.

My improvement removes all\"bjection's above noted and secures equally easy access to the floor below the rail, unobstructed by the supporting-feet, While the rail itself may be continuous, of any length, and permanent in its location.

That the structure of my invention may be fully understood,I will particularly describeit.

A is the counter, and B is the ordinary footrail, above described.

C C are ordinary brackets attached to the front of the counter A and supporting the foot-rail at their outer extremities.

D D are the supporting-feet, which rest upon the Hoor and directly sustain said footrail under any load Which may be imposed `upon it. c

The feet D are jointed to the rail B or to the brackets O in some suitable Way, so that when in position resting upon the floor they will afford the required support to the rail, and when the ioor is to be cleansed they may have hinged them directly to the rail by passing the rail through the joint-eye of the foot, as shown in Figs. l to 5; but it is evident a similar result may be secured by hiuging the -foot to the bracket O independent of the rail B, as shown in Fig. 6 by Way of illustration. It Will be apparent that this pivot can be arranged in a variety of Ways Without changing the character of the invention.

Having described my invention, I claim- 1. A foot-rail for counters, provided with permanent brackets, whereby said rail is su pported independent of the oor, .and hinged feet capable of being removed from contact with the Hoor, for the purpose set forth.

2. A footrail B and brackets C, connected with and supporting said rail independent of the ioor, combined With hinged or movable feet D to rest on the iioor and support said rail directly and be removed from the floor when it is desirable to cleanse the same.

3. A foot-rail B and supporting-brackets O, attached to the counter and supporting said rail independent of the floor, and the feet D, hinged to the railB, as set forth.

4. A foot-rail B, permanently mounted upon brackets O independent of the floor, and the individually-movable feet D, substantially as set forth.
