BAIL-EAR A D COVER-FASTENER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 470,147, dated March 1, 1892.

Application filed May 21, 1891- Serial No. 393,611- (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE D. STRAYER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of East Stroudsburg, in the county of Monroe and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bail- Ears and Cover-Fasteners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact de scription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

Figure 1 of the drawings is a vertical longitudinal section of the can and bail-ear and fastener, and Figs. 2 and 3 are perspective views of the bail-ear and fastener.

This invention has relation to certain improvements in bail-ears, the object being to provide a simple device of this character which will serve to hold the cover of a pail or vessel in place.

The invention consists in the novel struction, as hereinafter set forth.

In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the invention and the manner of its application, the letter A designates a pail or vessel, which may be of any form, and B the cover therefor. O and D represent the respective ears attached thereto and embodying my invention. The ear 0 may be of any suitable form and has a horn or projection c, extending inwardly therefrom and adapted to engage one end of the rim 1) of the cover for the purpose of holding it down to its place against displacement from any ordinary cause in connection with the ear D. Said earD has a slot d therein, in which is placed a spring-piece F, secured at one end to the ear and having a shoulder or bent portion f, which engages the rim of the cover at the opposite end or side COI1- from the ear 0. The free end of the spring may be formed into a thumb-plate g, by pressing which the shoulder or bent portion f is withdrawn from engagement with the cover, permitting its removal. The spring F is secured to the upwardly-extending arm of the ear just below the bail-receiving aperture, its

bowed portion resting in the slot d. The upwardly-extending portion of the ear having the engaging shoulder stands nearly parallel with the attached portion. It will be apparent that the action of the bowed'portion will be to expand or spread, throwing the shoulder firmly into engagement with the cover.

Having described this invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A bail-ear comprising the perforated 6o near the upper portion of the same and having a looped or bow portion lying in said recess, and a portion nearly. parallel with the said portion provided with an angular shoulder and with a thumb-plate, substantially as specified.

2. A pail or vessel having secured at one side a bail-ear having an integral projection adapted to engage the cover and at'the opposite side an ear D, having a slot therein, and a spring-piece held in said slot and secured at one end to said ear, its free end having the inwardly-bent shoulder and the thumb-plate, substantially as specified.
