COMBINED RULER, PAPER-CUTTER, AND BLOTTERI SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 469,915, dated March 1892.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. STANTON, J r., a citizen of the United States, residing at Lyndon, in the countyof Caledonia and State of Vermont, have invented certain new and usefulImprovementsinaCombinedRuler,Paper- Cutter, and Blotter; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the artto which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to a combined ruler, paper-cutter, and blotter, its objects being to provide an exceedingly serviceable and handy device for general use.

To this end my invention consists in certain features of novelty to be hereinafter described, and then pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan View of my combined instrument. Fig. 2 is a cross-section on line X X, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section on line Y Y, Fig. 1.

The instrument is formed almost completely of sheet metal, with which is combined a suitably-formed wire rod. The flat sheet-metal plate or strip a is provided onv one side with an out and up turned portion 1), downwardly and inwardly from which extends a flange c, the side being so bent as to form a perfectlystraight edge d. This edge at constitutes a ruler. The opposite side of .the plate is bent similarly to the other side having an out and up turned portion e and a downwardly and inwardly extending flange f, from the bottom of which projects outwardly the horizontal lip g, which constitutes a straight-edge. At each end of the plate a is a fiapj, each of which flaps is bent upwardly, inwardly, and downwardly, and then outwardly to form transverse sockets k, which receive and hold the intu rned ends lot a parallel wire rod m in front of the ruler or edge d. This rod m, together with the edge d,constitutes a parallel ruler. On top of the plate a is a handle n,which extends longitudinally thereof. The top of the cutting-lip g is provided with a scale of inches and fractions thereof.

Having thus described my invention, \vhatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is g 1. The herein-described instrument, the same comprising a plate or strip, a ruler at one side of the latter, a wire rod in front of and parallel with the ruler and secured to the ends of the plate, and'a blotter confined under the latter, substantially as set forth.

2. The herein-described instrument, the same comprising a plate or strip of sheet metal, out and up turned portions at opposite sides of the latter, down and in turned flanges projecting from said portions, and a cutting edge or lip projecting from one of said flanges, said construction providing suitable grooves at opposite sides of the plate, adapted to receive the edges of a blotter, substantially as set forth.
