Be it known that 1, JAMES W. GRAVES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lathrop, in the county of San Joaquin and State of California, have invented a new and useful Leather-Punch, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in leather-punches.
The object of the present invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive tool which will be strong and durable and adapted to punch a hole in a piece of leather and which, when not in use, will have the blade concealed within the handle.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a punch constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view, the blade being in operative position. Fig. 4 is a similar view, the blade being within Fig. 5 is an end view, partly in section.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, 1 designates a punch consisting of a handle 2, a blade 3, adapted, when not in use, to be returned into the handle, and a spring 4, arranged to lock the blade 3 in its operative position and in its position Within the handle.
The handle 2 is constructed of metal 'and is provided with a longitudinal opening 5 and a longitudinal slot 6, arranged on one face of the handleand communicating with the opening 5. The slot and the opening extend 1ongitudinally of the handle to the inner end of the same.
The blade 3 tapers toward the point and is curved in cross-section like a gouge, and it is provided at its inner end with a block 7, which is rectangular in cross-section and fits snugly in the longitudinal opening 5 of the handle, and is adapted to slide in the longitudinal opening to return the blade 3 into the handle. The block is provided on its inner face with a transverse recess 8 and on its outer face with 'a nib 9, arranged in the longitudinal slot 6 and adapted to be engaged by the finger to return the blade.
The spring 4 is secured intermediate its ends, and the latter are free and are bent inward and form lips adapted to engage the transverse recess of the block to secure the blade, and the spring is provided at its ends with cross-pieces projecting laterally from the spring and adapted to be readily grasped to disengage the spring and to adjust the blade.
One end 11 of the handle is for hammering on, and the other end is provided with lugs 12 and 18, the former of which has a round hole 14 and serves as a rivet-capper, and the latter has a recess-concavity and is employed for a rivet-set.
It will be seen that the punch is simple, strong, and durable, and is adapted to have its blade returned within the handle when not in use to enable it to be conveniently carried in the pocket and to protect the blade.
The handle is provided with transverse slots, in which the inwardly-bent ends of the spring are arranged to enable them to engage the block.
The invention is shown applied to a punch, and it will be readily understood that it is equally applicable to similar tools.
What I claim is 1. The combination of the handle having a longitudinal opening and provided with a longitudinal slot arranged on one face of the handle and transverse slots arranged on the opposite face of the handle, the blade having a block forming a head and provided on its inner face with a recess and on its outer face with a nib arranged in the longitudinal slot, and the springs secured intermediate its ends and provided with lips arranged in the transverse slots and adapted to engage the recess of the block, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the handle having a longitudinal opening and provided with a longitudinal slot arranged on one face and transverse slots arranged on the opposite face, a blade, a block secured on the inner end of the blade and conforming to the configuration of the longitudinal opening and provided on its inner face with a transverse recess and on its outer face with a nib arranged in the longitudinal opening, and the spring secured intermediate its ends and having the latter bent inward and forming lips arranged in the 5 transverse opening and adapted to engage the transverse recess of the block to secure the latter and retain the blade in position, substantially as described.
