Be it known that l, GASPAR M. WAGNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Oots, of which the following is a specification, reference being hadto the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure lis a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section on line 2 2 of Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is an end elevation. Fig. 4 is a detail, being a sectional view of one end of one of the side pieces of the cot, showing the c ot folded; and Fig. 5 is a detail, being a partial vertical section of one end of the cot, showing a modification. l

My invention relates to folding cots, and more particularly to that class of folding cots are adapted to be folded und-er and to slide horizontally under the cot, so as to leave the upper surface of the cot free and to avoid the necessity of removbing the bedclothes when it is desired to fold the cot. The objects of cots of this character are shown in my former patents, Nos. 440,7 32 and 440,733, dated November 13, 1890. a h

The objects of'my presentinvention are to provide improved guides upon which the end pieces may move when turned under the cot, to provide an improved method of securing the side rails upon the bed-frame, and to otherwise improve the construction of cots, of this character. I accomplish these objects as illustrated in the drawings and as hereinafter specied.

That which I regard as new will be pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings, the cot-frame consists of the usual side pieces A, held together by crossnieces A and end pieces B. A Woven-wire inattress or any other suitable material is secured upon the frame of the cot for supporting the bedclothes. The mattress C is preferably secured to the side pieces A at or near the top of said side pieces, as best shown in Figs. l and 2. l

The end pieces B at their upper portions form the end rails E of the cot and extend downward at each side to form the legs F, upon which the cot is supported. By this construction when the rails D are raised to a perpendicular position they may be held in such position by the insertion of the pins d into the rings Z). If desired, the pins may be inserted in the end pieces and the rings in the side rails, the operation in bot-h cases berlhis construction is shown in one of my said former patents.

' The side railsare provided at thelower portion of their ends with brackets c, which are Y secured to the side rails, and are provided with a portion bent at rightangles to the line of the side rails, said portion being adapted to receive one end of a wire spring G, which is adapted to turn in said bracket and which is secured at its opposite end to the end of the bed-frame` as best shown by dotted lines in Fig. 3. The tension of the spring is such that it will tend to hold the side rail down in contact with the side of the bed-frame, so that when the cot is set up the tension of the springs G will tend to hold the pins d in the rings b. I do not wish to limit myself to the construction shown of the brackets c or tothe constructionhelrein shown for securing the springs Gto the bed-frame or to the side rails, as this may be accomplished in many ways. By this construction when it is desired to lower` the side rails or to close the cot the side rails D may be raised so that the pins d will be free from the rings b and be folded over upon the bedclothes, the springs G per mitting the bottom of the rails D to be raised from the upper edge of the side pieces 'of the bed. The side rails may thereby be folded over upon the bed without necessitating the removal of the bedclothes, which forms a very`;

Bymeans of the movable guides h, pivotally engaged with the side pieces A, I render Y the construction more simple and desirable by providingsmooth and easy action of the parts in foldigthe end pieces beneath the cot. I also render the construction more, economical by avoiding upwardly extending slots inthe guides, as in my patents hereinbefore mentioned.

In order to morefirmly lock-the end pieces B in position `when the cot isset np,eacl1 end plate K is bent over at the top to form a hook l, which is adapted to receive a correspondin g hook m, secured upon the end piece B in suitable position, as best shown in Fig. 2. When the cot is set up, the hooks Z and m will fit into each other and hold the parts more Iirmly in position. If desired, the hooks Z and m may be omitted, as shown'in Fig. 5; but I prefer to use them, as the cot is thereby more firmly locked in its upright position.
