HEATING-CHIMNEY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 469,700, dated March 1, 1892.
Application filed November 4, 1891. Serial No. 410.880. (No model.)
To all whom, may concern.-
Be it known that I, SAM. T. I I. HOLT, of Philippi, in the county of Barbour and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Heating-Chimneys; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a front view of my improved heating-chimney, the front wall being broken away to show the smoke and air flues. Fig.2 is a vertical central section through the same transversely of the fire-places. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on line 3 3, Fig. l, looking down. Fig/t is a similar view online t 4, Fig. l, looking up.
This invention is an improvement in the construction of fire-place chimneys whereby the fire-backs are utilized to heat air to be supplied to the rooms in the buildings; and
'the invention consists in the novel construction of the chimney with fire-places, smoke and air ilues, and certain other novel details of construction and arrangement of parts, as will be fully understood from the following description and claims.
I propose to make the entire chimney-lines, uc., of masonry, either stone or brick, using metallic fire-backs for the open fire-places, however, so that no special pipe-fittings will be necessary nor expensive special work required to construct a chimney embodying my invention..
In the drawings, A B represent two open -fire-place arches arranged back to back or directly opposite each other at the base of the chimney and communicating at top in the usual manner with smoke-,nues a b, as shown. The arches are separated, however, but are provided with metallic fire-backs C C, and a close chamber D is thus formed between the tire-places, into which chamberfresh air is admitted through passages-d d in the base of the chimney, at opposite sides thereof, and below the hearths and oor of the rooms the fresh air may be conducted to these passages through suitable pipes, if desired. The passages d are also provided with valves or dampers for cutting off the supply of air, it' desired.
E .F designate heating-fines formed at the opposite sides of the smoke-fines and not communicating therewith, yet nearly inclosing the same, so as to utilize the heat from the walls of the smoke-flues to warm the air in the air-fines. These flues E F communicate at bottom through passages c f, respectively, with chamber D at opposite sides, as shown. The air-fines extend to the upper story or stories of the building and are provided with registered openings therein through which theL heated air can escape into the rooms above, as desired. Registers may also be placed in the lower rooms to permit escape of heated air therein from chamber D.
G designates a partition plate or wall extending diagonally of'chamber D between the tire-arches, and H is a door or valve in said partition, which,when closed,will shut off communication between air-fines E andF through chamber D and when opened will permit air to circulate freely through chamber D into either or both of the ues E F. Said valve may be adjusted by a rod h, as indicated in the drawings.
The operation of the device is as follows: Fires being kindled in the fire-places, the iirebacks and smoke-hues are heated, and the air in chamber D is also highly heated by contact lwith the fire-backs between which it circulates, and the heated air rises in ues E F, the heat being maintained or increased by contact with the heated walls of the smokefiues. vFresh air entering chamber D is heated by contact with the fire-backs and rises into flues E F and is delivered into the rooms above whose registers are open. The passages e f might have valves or dampers, so that the entire volume of heated air could be diverted into either flue E or F; but by closing the registers in either flue the same effect will be produced. By having a valve which will diagonally divide or separate chamberD should re only be in one tire-place the valve can be set so as to confine the heated air to one side, and also prevent the air from contacting with the cold fire-back, which, being of metal, is a good heatconductor and would thus lessen the temperature of the air ascend- IOO ing to the air-flue. By this construction I utilize the heat oi" the iire-backs and smokeues to warm air to be supplied tothe rooms of a building without any commingling of the 5 air and products of combustion and Without lessening the temperature of the tires or withdrawing heat from the lower rooms. The airlues also being at sides of the smoke-lines and above the tire-arches preserve the symmetry of the chimney.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent thereon, is-
1. In aheating-chimney, the combination of the tire-place having a metallic back C, a chamber Din rear thereof, a central masonry re-ilue a above the fire-place, masonry airlues E and F above the fireplace and on each side of the fire-flue, communicating atbottom with the chamberDthrough passages e f, respectively, and the air-inlet ilue d to said chamber, substantially as described.
2. In a cl1imney-heater,the combination of the fire-place, the chamber in rear thereof,
v partition, substantially as and for the purpose described.
