SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 469,657, dated February 23, 1892. Application filed June 22, 1891- serial No. 397,058. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM PETERSEN, of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed-Lounges, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
My invention relates to improvements in bed-lounges; and it consists in the novel arrangement and combination of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described, and designated in the'claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of myinvention, showing the same when desired to be used as a bed. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a detachable head and arm rest. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section of my invention when the same is occupied as a sofa or lounge. Fig. 4 is a similar section of my invention when used as a bed, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a detachable seat or cushion which I employ when I use my invention as a sofa or lounge.
I will describe the use and object of my invention in connection with the mechanical parts embodied in the same.
Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates a stationary portion, the same being provided with a back 2, upholstered in any suitable and desired manner. The back 2 may be made detachable, if desired, which is, however, not illustrated in the drawings. Located in said stationary portion 1 is a section of springs 3, to which a section of springsa is hinged, thus permitting section 4 to be folded on section 3, or vice versa. Each of the sections 3 and 4 are provided with projections 17, formed integrally with the frame-work thereof, and these projections have eyes 18 on their outer ends, the eyes of section 3 engaging those of section 4, thus hinging the sections together.

' 6 indicates ahinged portion which is hinged to the stationary portion 1 in anysuitable and mechanical manner, thus permitting said portion 6 to be. folded upon the stationary portion 1 whenever it is desired to use my invention for a sofa or lounge, the position of which when so used is illustrated in Fig. 3.
Located in said portion 6 is the section of springs lbefore mentioned. The hinged portion 6 is provided with a detachable leg 7, which is mounted in a socket 8, said leg .being adapted to be removed and placed within the section 6 Whenever it is desired to use my invention as a sofa, and answers as asupport for said hinged portion 6 when my invention is used as a bed. Said hinged portion 6 is also provided with two standards 9, which answer as a support for the head of the hinged portion 6 when it is desired to use my invention for a bed, and also as a support, or rather a means, for securing the head or arm rest 10 on said hinged portion 6 when it is desired to use my invention for a sofa or lounge.
The head or arm rest 10 is illustrated in Fig. 2, and may be made of various forms without departing from the nature thereof. Said head or arm rest 10 is provided with holes or perforations 11, in which the standards 9 are adapted to be inserted. It may be premised in this connection that when it is desired to use the invention for a bed the operator should remove said head or arm rest 10 and then the standards 9 and the detachable leg 7 will answer as supports for the hinged portion 6.
12 indicates a skeleton frame, which is upholstered in any suitable and mechanical manner, the length thereof being less than the hinged portion 6, or, in other Words, the length of the skeleton frame 12, plus the width of the head-rest 10, is equal to the length of the hinged portion 6.
The upholstered skeleton frame 12 is adapted to be placed upon and secured to the hinged portion 6 in any suitable and mechanical manner, preferably, however, by a screw, which passes through the hinged portion 6, which is not illustrated, and into the skeleton frame 12. The hinged portion 6 is provided with lugs, which are not illustrated, the same adapted to fit in holes 13, formed in the skeleton frame 12. It may be premised in this connection that the upholstered skeleton frame 12 is only employed whenever it is desired to use my invention as a sofa or lounge. \Vhenever it is desired to use my invention for a bed, said upholstered skeleton frame 12 may be removed, if desired, or remain secured to said hinged portion 6, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 4.
14 indicates a continuous reticulated pillow-rest, which extends transversely across portions 1 and 6 when my invention is used for a bed, as illustrated in Fig. 1. The hinged portion 6 is provided with a socket, which is not illustrated, similar to the socket 5, and in said socket the ends 15 of the pillow-rest are adapted to fit, thereby holding said pillowrest at an oblique angle relative to the horizontal surface of the bed.- The pillow-rest 14 may be used as a pillow, if desired.
16 indicates a cord or chain, one end of which is secured to the hinged portion 6 in any suitable Way, and the other end thereof secured to the detachable leg 7, thereby preventing the said leg from being mislaid.
Having fullydescribed my invention,what I claim is-- In a sofa-bed, amain or stationary section 1, a second section 6,hinged to one side thereof and provided with a le -socket, legs 7 and 9, supporting the same, the former being detachable ,from the leg-socket, bed-bottoms within said sections, a cushioned frame 12 of less length than section 6 and removably secured to the under side thereof, whereby when the sections are folded a sofa is formed, and a head-rest 10, removably secured tolegs 9 on the under side of section 6 at the end of frame 12, substantially as described.
