Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
NILS O. STARKS, OF MADISON, IVISOONSIN.
SlCKLE-HEAD AND PITMAN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 469,605, dated February 23, 18192.
Application tiled August 26, 1891. Serial No. 403.756. (No model.)
To all whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, NrLs O. SrAEKs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Madison., in the county of Dane and State of lVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sickle-Heads and Pitinen; and I do hereby declare that the followlng is a full, clear, and exact description of the inventiomwhich will enable others skilled in the artto which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in sickle-heads and pitmen for mowing, reaping, and other similar machines.
The object of the present invention is to provide an improved sickle-head and pitman which will automatically take up all slack or wear, so that there will be no play between said parts. v
The invention consists in. the4 novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective of a sickle-head and pitman constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section, the pitman being removed. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the pitman detached. Fig. 4C is a section on the line a', Fig. 2.
In the said drawings, the reference-n umeral 1 designates a bar having an enlarged end 2, from which project two lugs 3 and et, forming the sickle-head, with an intervening space 5. The inner or adjacent faces of these lugs are ccncaved or formed with circular recesses 6 and 7.
VThe numeral S denotes the pitman consisting of a metal bar, having an enlarged hemispherical head 9, adapted to be inserted and fit in the recess in the lug 3.
The numeral 10 denotes a fiat spring having a head 12 similar to head 9, and adapted to engage in the .recess in lug 4. This spring near its head bears against the pitman, while its other end is bent into a hook 13, with which engages a metal strap 14, embracing the pitman.
The bar 1 is provided with a number of perforations 15, by which it may be secured to the cutter-bar by means of bolts or other fastening devices.
The operation will be readily understood. The end of the pitman is inserted in the space between the lugs 3 and 4, and the spring will force the heads 9 and 12 into the recesses 0r concavities in the lugs, holding them securely, yet permitting them to oscillate therein.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. The combination, with the sickle-head consisting of recessed lugs with an intervening space,of the pitman havingahemispherical head, and a spring connected with the pitman and having a hemispherical head, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the sickle-head having the recessed lugs, of the pitman having a hemispherical head, a spring bearing against the pitman and having a hemispherical head at one end and a hook at its opposite end, and a strap encircling said pitman and engaging with the said hook, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
NILS O. STARKS.
