COAT-HOOK.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 469,564, dated February 23, 1892.

.To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY O. HART, of Detroit, in the county of IVayne and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Coat-Hooks, of which the following is a specification.

My invention consists in an improvement in coat-hooks, hereinafter fully described and claimed.

Figure 1 is a side elevation with one hook omitted. Fig. 2 is a top plan view omitting the cap-plate. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the cap-plate and the attaching-screw. Fig. 4c is a bottom plan View of the cap-plate. Fig. 5 is abottom perspective of the inner end of one of the hooks. Fig. 6 is a perspective of the base-plate of the bracket.

In shipping coat-hooks of the class which have two hooks supported from a single bracket it is necessary to make a much larger package than if hooks could be knocked down, and the same is true when a hat-rack or similar article of furniture is shipped with the hooks in position. If one hook becomes broken in shipping, it is necessary to throw away the entire hook and replace it with a new one. My invention is designed to obviate these difficulties.

G represents a bracket to which is secured a screw-bolt I-I, carrying a nut I, the screwbolt being intended to pass through the support and be secured in place by the nut I. Cast on the forward edge of the end of the bracket is a base-plate W, which has a central boss F, in which is tapped a hole for a screw. On the two sides of this plate IV, adjacent to the bracket G, are raised flanges R and S, and on the other two sides are somewhat lower flanges P and Q, which extend only along a portion of the sides, as shown in Fig. 6, thereby leaving the openings for the insertion of the hooks, and at the front of the cap is a lug E, raised as high as are the flanges R and S.

A and B represent the hooks, each of which ends at the inner end of its shank in a rectangular offset C, Fig. 6, having therein a recess T to fit over the low flanges P or Q and SerlalNo. 395,931. (No model.)

rounded off, as shown at c, Fig. 6, to fit around the boss F.

K represents a loose cap-plate, which is provided on its sides with flanges N N to fit down onto flanges R and S, and at its front is a projection M to fit down on the lug E, and has through its center a hole to receive a screw.

L represents a screw adapted to pass through cap-plate K and screw into boss F, thereby binding the cap-plate K firmly to base-plate IV and holding the hooks A and B firmly in position between the cap and base.

J represents a knob, which may be used as a hat or coat support, into the lower end of which may be cast the screw L, though this may of course be omitted, if desired. By loosening the screw L, so as to permit the cap K to rise sufficiently to disengage the low flanges P and Q from the recess T, the hooks A and B may be withdrawn and the whole structure packed closely for shipping, and can be readily put together by inserting the shanks of the hooks A and B between the cap-plates and base K and NV and clamping the screw L until the whole is held firmly in position.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a coat-hook, the combination of a bracket and means of attaching the same, a base-plate secured to the bracket, a movable cap-plate, a screw for detachably clamping the cap-plate to the baseplate, and a hook having its shank formed to enter between the cap and base plates and be removably locked therein, substantially as shown and described.

2. In a coat-hook, the combination, with a bracket G and base-plate IV, having therein the boss F and the low flange P, of a cap-plate K, screw L and hook A, having the offset shank C, with recess T, substantially as shown and described.

3. In a coat-hook, the combination, with the bracket G and the base-plate IV, having therein the boss F and the low flange P, of a capplate K, screw L, secured to knob J, and book A, having the offset shank C, with recess T, detaohably clamping the hooks to said plate,

substantially as shown and described. I substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
