Description
L. W. CARSON. GAR COUPLING.
(No Model.)
No. 469,541. Patented Feb. 23, 1892.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEONIDAS IV. CARSON, OF ELMA, IOWA.
CAR-COUPLING.
"SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 469,541, dated February 23, 1892.
Application filed May 21, 1891- Serial No. 393,595. (No model.)
To a. whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEONIDAS W. CARSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Elma, in the county of Howard and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Couplings; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the inven tion, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a vertieallongitudinal section showing catch-piece lowered. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing catch-piece raised. Fig. 4 is a detail showing catch-piece.
This invention has relation to certain improvements in car-couplings; and it consists in the novel features thereof, as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the invention, the letter A designates the draw bar and head.
Bis the opening in the draw-head to receive the coupling-link and communicating with a chamber 0 in the draw-head, in which is pivoted the retaining catch-piece D. This catch is arranged to turn freely on its pivot and at its forward portion has an angular recess cl, of such form that the front upper edge of the catch-piece forms a hook d. The top portion of said catch-piece has the two shoulders e 6, between which the body of the piece is cut away, and these shoulders are designed to engage a stop-pin f and limit the rotary movement of the catch in either direction.
F is a pivoted gravity piece or pawl norward and causing the hook d to catch and retain the link, the pawl at the same time falling against the shoulder e and preventing the release of the link until the lever G is operated to lift the pawl. The rear portion of the catch-piece hassufiicient weight as soon as the pawl is lifted to turn the catch backwardly and permitthe withdrawal of the link.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The car-coupling comprising the chambered draw-head having pivoted therein a rotary catch-piece, the pivotal point of which is so located that it will be held out of coupling engagement by gravity, the top portion of said piece having thereon two shoulders e e, between which the body of said piece is cut away, a stop pin adapted to engage with either of said shoulders, a gravity-pawl normally resting upon the catch-piece and adapted to engage one of said shoulders to hold said pin in coupling engagement, and lever and chain releasing mechanism connected to said pawl, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LEONIDAS IV. CARSON.
