In order to retain the outer end of the 11pper fringing-strands in position after the loops have been cut, We employ a retaining-finger S, which is carried by a rock-shaft S', mounted in bearings s on the table B, this rock-shaft having an arm S2, which is connected by a rod T to the upper end of the lever P, so that as the looper-arm J swings toward the left from the needle to draw the loop and the knife M moves forward on the same the finger S will be raised to permit the looper-arm J to draT the loop of thread beneath the same, and after the knife has cut the loop and is retracted the Iinger S will descend, so as to retain the cut strands, the looper-arm moving back over the finger in order to again catch the needlethread to draw a fresh loop.
Having thus described our invention, we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The combination of the vibrating looperarin and the knife-slide carried thereby with a knife-operating arm having a segmental slot concentric with the axis of vibration of the looper-arm when the knife is retracted and means for vibrating said knife-operating arm, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, in a machine for forming fringe upon fabrics, of the single needle,
the work-table or bed, two hooked loopers,-
one above the bed and the other beneath the bed, and mechanism for vibrating said loopers, so as to cause them to engage with the needle-thread and form projecting unconfined loops of said thread above and below the fabric, substantially as specified.
3. The combination of the work-table or bed, the single needle, a looper-arm vibrating with the single needle-thread and to form pro- 5o jecting uncon fined loops of the same, substantially as specified.
4:. The combination, in a machine for forming fringe upon fabrics, of the needle, the
work-table or bed, and two vibrating loopers, b
one above the bed for engaging with the needle-thread on one side of the fabric and forming a projecting loop of said thread and the other beneath the bed for engaging with and forming a projecting loop of the needle-thread 6o on the other side of the fabric, both of said loopers being combined with knives for cutting the loops formed thereby, substantially as specified.
5. The combination of the Work-table or bed, the needle, a looper-arm vibrating in a substantially-vertical plane beneath the bed,
and a looper-arm vibrating in a substantiallyhorizontal plane above the bed, both of said looper-arms being adapted to engage with the 7o needle-thread and form projecting loops of the same and each arm being combined with a knife for cutting the loop formed thereby, substantially as specified.
6. The combination of the upper looper and 'means for vibrating the same, a knifeslide carried by said upper looper, a lever engaging with said knife-slide at a point coincident with the axis of'V rotation of the looper,
and means for vibratin g said knife-lever, sub- 8o stantially as specified.
