SPECIFICATTON forming part of Letters Patent No. 469,126, dated February 16, 1892.

of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Door-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in door-fasteners; and the purpose of my invention is to provide an improved construction in a device of this nature to contribute increased strength, coupled with economy in material and simplicity in use.

To the above end my invention consists in a door-fastener or door-chain comprising flexibly-joined bars or plates firmly but flexibly secured to the door or" jamb and a staple secured to the other part, as the j amb or door, the plates or bars being provided, respectively, with a slot and key to engage each other when the plates are brought together after passing through the staple.

My invention'consists, further, in the specific details of construction and combinations of parts, all as hereinafter more fully set forth.

The drawing represents a door-fastener constructed in accordance with myinvention and is shown in position as secured to the jamb.

A represents a plate firmly secured, as by screws or bolts, to the jamb and provided with a staple t. B represents a similar plate firmly secured to the door and having the elongated staple s. The door-chain proper comprises in its preferred form a plate 0, perforated at one end, as at r, to receive a link of a chain D, the other end of which chain passes through the staple t on the plate A, and said bar 0 carries also at its upper end a turnkey E. The other part of said door chain or fastener comprises a bar F, similar to the bar 0, but preferably shorter, and provided at its extremity with an elongated slot E of a dimension in one direction to receive the key E. The bars 0 and F are joined together by a link-hinge connection G, for which any other flexible connection may be substituted, although it is deemed desirable that the connection shall in any case be of metal and strong. The length of the chain D or of the connection G, or both, may be regulated by the distance between the plate A and the plate B on the jamb and door, respectively.

It is quite apparent that the turn-key E may be made-self-locking or provided with means to prevent its being returned to the opening position without a specially constructed key, and it is also clear that the loop afforded by the'staple 5 may be provided in other ways, as by bending outward the plate B at its central part or securing the staple 8 directly to the door without the interposed plate.

I do not limit myself to the specific construction shown in the drawing, although- I prefer it for many reasons as combining simplicityland strength with a somewhat ornamental appearance.

The especial utility of my construction is derived from the fact that a door-bar is provided across the door-opening to present the strongest possible resistance to displacement,-

the strain upon the staples which secure the bar to the door being lateral and hence in the direction of the greatest strength of the securing means, and the advantages of a bar and of a chain combined in a single device.

hat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l.-A door-fastener comprising bars flexibly connected together at adjacent extremities and adapted to fold one upon the other, one of said bars being flexibly connected to the door or jamb and having a length enabling it to extend over the door and jamb, said bars at their opposite extremities being provided with means for retaining them together when folded one upon the other, and a loop or staple on the jamb or door to receive the fastener and hold the same at the flexible connection between the members, substantially as described.
