UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
IVILLIAM T. CLEVELAND, OF NEWPORT, TEXAS.
SHEARS FOR CUTTING HOT METAL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 469,078, dated. February 16, 1892.
Application filed September 30, 1891. Serial No.407,290. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM T. CLEVE- LAND,a citizen of the United States, residing at Newport, in the county of Clay and State of Texas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Shears for Cutting Hot Metal, of which the following is a specificaion.
This invention relates to a device which is more especially intended for shearing hot metal, although it may be used for cutting cold material whether the same be in the form of bars or flat plates.
The invention is clearly shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure l is a perspective View of the device complete. Figs. 2, 3, and at are detail views showing, respectively, the cutting-frame, cutting-lever, and steadying brace or pin. Fig. 5 is a modification of Fig. 2.
Thecutting-frame (designated by letter A) is'composed of steel or of wrought-iron with a steel edge beveled, as at b, and with downwardly-projecting ends a d, which are preferably made pointed, in order that they may be driven into a block or other foundation. The aforesaid ends 0 (1 may, however, be provided with shoulders, screw-threads, and nuts to permit of the device being bolted to a stand of any desired description.
One end of the frame A- is'provided with a transverse horizontal perforation for the reception of a bolt E, by means of which the cutting-lever F, likewise provided with a bolthole, is secured in position with its cuttingedge next the frame, as shown in Fig. 1. The lever F, like the frame A, is made of steel or of iron and provided with a steel cuttingedge.
A brace or pin G, having an eye It for receiving the bolt E, is adapted to be secured in rear of the cutting frame and lever, so as to insure steadiness to the whole arrangement.
To guard against battering the edges of the cutting-frame when securing same in position each end thereof should be provided with a shoulder and hammering-block, as shown at z z" in Fig. 5.
From the peculiar construction of this device it will be seen that it is only necessary to remove the bolt E to permit of a separation of the parts whenever it is found necessary to sharpen the cutting-edges thereof.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a metal-shearing device, the combination of a frame having a cutting-edge and downwardly-projecting pointed ends at each end thereof, as described, with a cutting-lever and a bolt connecting same with the frame, substantially as and. for the purpose specified.
2. The combination, in a metal-shearing device, of a frame having a cutting-edge and downwardly-projecting ends, as described, with a cutting-lever, a brace, and a bolt for connecting the lever with the frame and brace, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. Ina metal-shearing device, the combination, with a cutting-lever, of a frame having a cutting-edge and downwardly-projecting pointed ends, and hammer-blocks at each end of the frame, a brace, and a bolt whereby the lever is connected with the frame and brace, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM T. CLEVELAND.
Witnesses;
JOHN JACKSON, W. A. BARTON.
