EPECEFICTEONEfermng parl: of Letters Patent No, 469,023, dated February 16, 1892.
'ifrication fiied September 17, 1891. Serial No.405,939. (No model.)
To all when?, t? may conce/7L:
Be it known that i, S'rErHAN Baoi'eHoANS, e, citizen of the YUnite States, and resident of iriilwnnio-ze, in the county of iiiiiwankee, and in the Siate ot' iifiseouein, have invented eerrnin new and useful improvements in Lawi-Spiini:ieisg und ido hereby deeinre that the following is i'ull, Meer, and erect rie- Scription thereof.
The object of my invention is to prou iilo a lawn-sprinkler having chambers for I.he aol eumnlntion ot eend and other sediment, which or whollyy prevent the flow of water; also has torito obj-eet to provide such asp rin kler that wii econoniize the water unil elt'ect .fr better distribution of. the Home than i5 ordi( nariiy the ense, und. to eine arrange the parts ns to prevent unnecessary wear.
My invention therefore consists in certnin pecniinritics of construction :imi arrangement Y et' parte to be hereinut'ter described, with re`terenee to the aeeompenying drnwinge, und subsequently einirieii,

lie'erring by letter to the drnwingfs, A represents n protorubly giobuiursediment-ohnmber mounted upon hws i und provided with right-nuguinr extenuions t1 i), the hitter one ot' these extensions being scre\\"tlircmlcd or otherwise tietzfwhnlily stcurof'l to the lower oml of a. vertical pipo E, unid pipo having its upper enfil lili/wis :suoni-culo the iower emi ot' :i hollow .stud l"7 tho hitter boing practically n continunlion o? rThe upper portion olf the hoilow .ntuil if is reduced nomen/hul. to forni :in nnuulurshonlder (L, that servos :is n rest for tho iower und ol' a, thinible ii, iooscly litteil over Suhl hollow stuii, mul lo properly hohl the Lhinihle tl in place uno :it thv sume lime prevent water :inni Sediment from ioilging between unid thimble and Stull i province, puckingbnmi checknnts'c c?, snifl peeking being :ii-ranged intornrosiinte or the upper elige ofV uniti thinible :imi the shrek-nut L3, both of said nuts` boing screwed to the upper enil ot' the aforesaid hollow stud. i
The lower end of the thiinble G is provided with an exterior]yeCreW-tlnezuled olsel: I), hnvinganoutWardiy-extendingannularflange c, and engaging the Screw-threaded offset i), und impinging against the flange c is the lower interiorlyeerei'-threeded portion ot a Chunk, ber il, the lutter being preferably cylindrical in shape et the bottom und spherical nt the top. c From the foregoing construction und arrinngement et ports it will be seen that I provide n circuler space di intermediate of the thiinble G und lower cylindrical. portion ot the chamber il for n purpose to be heroine-fterdeseribcd.
I represents' sprinhler- Lubes having the usual enrvnture, the innerends of said tubes engaging screw-threaded openingsein the upper part of the cylindrical portion of the chamher Il and the outer ends being provided with oups f5, having slots r/. Extending through and secured to the top of the spherical porltion of chamber li is another sprinkier-tube li, the iower cmi of the lutter being provided with openings '1T and the upper end withncap j, similnr to the cape/'nt the outer ends of the sprinkler-Lubes I,
Assuminjf that the paris nre in the position shown in liig'. 1, with the chnmbenextonsion i connected to u hoseor pipe fitted to asouree of wntensupply, :unl il; is desired to operato my device, the witter when turned` on will run into the lower chumber A up through the vertionl pipe lil into the upper-chamber ll, through the sprinkler-tubes I ll., :mil he Iiunlly flisehnrgud in the formo? spinythroughthe enpl'orce ol' the water removing the lhiuihle (i, together with the upper chamber ll.E and sprinkler-tubes l lf, upon the hollow Stuilb.
ly providing the slotted cups nt the ends of the spriuhlertubes I obtnin :i better distribution ot the water, although the lutter reult depends soluewl'uit upon the vertical sp1-ink ler-tul e lr, which not, only Servos :is un outlet for witter, but also :is :in inlet for nir, the hitter risiuf,r lo the top ol' the chamber ll und serving :is mi zuhlitionul `pressure for the water.
slots nl. the emls of .will sprinkler-tubes,the J IOO It will be observed that by providing the lower chamber A and the space cl' intermediate of the thimble G and lower cylindrical portion of the chamber H sand and other sediment in the Water Will accumulate therein and prevent the sprinkler from being clogged, ,thereby doing away with the diienlty heretofore experienced.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. I n a lawn-sprinkler, the combination7 with a suitably-mounted base forming a sediment-chamber free fromvpip'es or other obstruetions and having inletpand outlet in the walls thereof,of a pipe rising from'said outlet,
- a hollow'stnd secured to the upper-end-,of
said'pipe, a suitably-packed revoluble thimble-monnted on said hollowstud, .a tight air,
water, land sediment chamber-secured to Said 'thimble .mounted on saidhollow plug, ef a tight air, Water, and sediment chambersecured tosaid thimble,sp1aying-pipesextending laterally from the walls of said tight chamber, and a vertical air-inlet and spraying-tube projecting within said tight chamber' and having a closed bottom and a series of openings t 3. In a lawn-sprinkler, the combination,f
with a revolubie thimble mounted on the upper end of the water-passage pipe, of atight air, water, and sediment chamber secured to said tlximble,- av series of 'imperfora'te pipes ext-ending laterally from. the walls of said chamber, caps on the outer ends of said pipes,
having transverse slots across ftheir vertical .on-terf-aces, and a vertical `vtube projecting within said tight chamber .and extending sev above-thesame, .the-lower lend of said 'tribe bein-g closed and having -perferationsjnst above said closed vend` and the upperveuter 4.pm-lion of said tube" being-imperferate and fitted wit-lua capat it's end havingatransverse slot across itshorizont-al nppe-rfaesnbstantial ly vas shown and-'described I '-In testimony that I claim .the foregoing I have hereunto set my'hand.at Milwaukee, in ,the county of Milwaukee and State of islconsin, in the presence of-two witnesses.
