To all whom it may concern Be it known thatI, Gnonon 'B. VAN Sroxnn, a citizen'of the United States, residing at Garden City, Nassau county, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trapping Devices for Gas-Burners, of which the following isza full, clear, and exact description,
This invention relates to burners, and is particularly concerned withmeans for preventing the clogging of the fuel feed openings thereto from sediment contained in the fuel. While of general utility, it is particularly useful in connection with burners adapted for ""Blau gas wherein the exit aperture from the feed conduit to the burner is of a very restricted area and is very easily clogged by sediment.-
The invention is described in detail in the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming part thereof and illustrating a preferable embodiment of the invention.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view in elevation illustrating the application of the trapping device to a Blau gas burner of conventional form. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of a coupling in the fuel supply conduit with my trapping device applied thereto. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of said coupling. Fig. i is a vertical section therethrough. Fig. 5 is a detail viewin top plan and side elevation of the trapping cylinder.
Fig. 6 is a vertical sectional view through the coupling member illustrating a modification.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, 1 indicates a suitable gas supply tube or conduit having an extension 2 leading to the burner proper 3 with which a shade holder 4 of conventional form is associated. Interposed between the gas supply conduit 1 and its extension 2 is a tubular coupling 5 interiorly threaded and provided intermediate its ends with a transverse web or partition 6 having a feed opening 7 therein and having a concentric nozzle 8 extending from said opening to and beyond the end of the coupling,saidfeed opening 8 being progressively reduced in diameter in the nozzle and forming at the exit end of the nozzle a restricted outlet aperture 9. At the side of the transverse web 6 opposite the nozzle 8, an annu lar boss 10 is provided forming with the adjacent side of the coupling 5, a cupped well ortrap 11. Loosely seated within. the coupling 5 is a tubular member 12, having its upper end 13 closed and imperforate, and lts opposite end open and of such diameter as to seat within the well 11 between the boss 10 and the interior face of the coupling As I have above stated, the upper end of this tubular member is closed, but in its sides out of the line of direct draftand intermediate its ends I provide one or more feed openings 14 which communicate with the supply conduit 1 and with the feed opening 8 through the transverse web 6.
In the use of a feed and burner device of the-particular design herein described, the gas is fed under pressure through the supply conduit 1 until it strikes the closed upper end 13 of the trapping cylinder 12, whereupon it will be deflected by the flaring sides of said cylinder to the sides of the coupling 5 and into the cupped well so that any sediment contained in the gas will drop down within the well or trap 11, the gas itself entering through the side feed apertures 14: and going thence through the web opening 7 and nozzle 8 to the burner. In use in con nection wit-h Blau and similar gases, the nozzle 8 acts as an air injecting and feed nozzle, and a perforated air inlet tube 15 is provided exteriorly of the nozzle 8 and cooperates with openings formed in the extension 2 of the feed conduit, as is usual in burners of this construction. The pressure of the gas securely holds the tubular trapping member 12 seated in the well, 11 and over the boss 10, and this m mber may be readily removed at any time to cleanse the well portion of the coupling.
In Fig. 6 I have illustrated a slight modification of this device, wherein a coupling member 5 having a transverse web 6 with a feed opening 7 therethrough and a nozzle 8 is provided with an annular groove 16 therein concentrically of the web feed opening 7 instead of the boss structure of the first form described. The tubular trapping member 12" is the same form as that described in connection with Figs. 15 inclusive, and the nozzle 8 is provided with a similar exit feed opening 9 of restricted area.
While I have herein described preferable embodiments of my invention, it should be understood that the same may be altered in detail and relative arrangement of parts within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim, therefore, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: v
1. In a device of the character described, a section of gas supply conduit having a transverse web therein provided with a feed opening therethrough, and with an integral nozzle portion extending from said opening, said web having a ridge formed about the edges of the opening therethrough providing, with adjacent sidewalls of said section a cupped trapping well, a trapping cylinder having one closed imperforate end and one open end, said cylinder being positioned with the interior face of its closed end in the direct line of gas flow and with its edges at the open end loosely seated within and against said cupped well portion, said cylinder being provided with a gas inlet aperture in the side wall thereof and out of the direct line of gas flow, said opening communicating with the gas flow side of said section and with said web opening and nozzle.
