JOHN BROUGHTON, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
I CASING FOR STREET-WASHER CONNECTIONS, SERVICE-COCKS, AND HYDRANTS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 236,540, dated January 11, 1881.
(No model.)
To all whom tt may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN BROUGHTON, of the city of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oasings for Street-Washer Connections, Service-Cocks, and Hydrants, of which the following is a specification.
Although my improvements are applicable to casings for service-cocks with street-washer connections and to those for hydrants of various kinds, they are particularly intended for those street-washer connections and hydrants in which the stand or delivery pipe is attached to and arranged in line with a hollow cockplug, and which serves not only as a delivery or discharge pipe, but also as a convenient means for turning the plug of the cock.
One ofmy improvements consists in the combination, in a casing, with a vertically-divided column, of a box to the under side of which said vertical column is bolted, and which is constructed with angular flanges for the reception of the angular formation of the top of said divided column, so as to prevent lateral separation of the parts thereof.
Another improvement consists in the combination of the casing composed of the two vertical united columns-sections, a hollow box to the under side of which said sections are secured and by which they are held against lateral separation, a cock secured and supported between said column-sections, and a pipe or rod connected with the cock-plug and extending upward between said sections into said box.
The accompanying drawings represent a. service-cock and street-washer connection and their casing, illustrating my invention.
Figure l represents a vertical section. Fig. 2 represents a horizontal section on the line m :10, Fig. 1, and an inverted plan of the sidewalk-box. Fig. 3 represents a horizontal sec tion on the dotted line y 1h-Fig. l; and Fig. 4 represents a plan, showing the cover of the sidewalk-box partly broken away the better to illustrate the construction.
Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures.
A designates the vertical column of the casing, and B the sidewalk-box with which said column communicates.
The stop-cock here shown is of' peculiar construction, and will be brietly described, although it forms no part oi' the present application, but will be made the subject of au other application for Letters Patent. O designates the shell, and l) the plug, ot' this cock. The shell is constructed with a transverse water-way, O', while the plug is constructed with a corresponding water-way, O2.
E designates a passage leading from the in let side of the water-way O to apo'rt, a, inthe taper seat for the plug and above the waterway C.
In the plug D, above the water-way O2, isa cavity, D', opening` at the large end of the plug and terminating below in a port, b, ranging with the port a and ad:V pted to be brought into communica-tion therewith by the turning of the plug. To the upper open end of the plug is attached a pipe, F, which extends upward in line with the axis of the plug, and constitutes a stand or delivery pipe, as well as a rod for turning the plug by the application of a short key to the upper end thereof, which is suitably formed for the reception of such key.
'Vhen the plug is turned to the position shown in Fig. l the water can pass through the water-way O O2 to a building, and also through the passage E, cavity D', and pipeF` to the street-washer connection. Then the plug is turned half round the water is shut off from the street-washer, but remains turned on the building; but by turning the plug a quarter of a turn in either direction from the position it occupies in the drawings the water will be shut oft' entirely.
The vertical column A is provided on opposite sides with openings or holes A', which are adapted to fit snugly to the shanks c of the lcock O and support and securely hold the same.
To provide for the insertion of the cock. I construct the column A of two united vertical sections, the joint between them being through the openings or holes A. The meeting edges of the' two sections maybe provided with lugs or iianges d, through which bolts may be in- IOO serted for securing them together. rlhis making of the column in two sections with a vertical joint also provides for casting it without corin g. rIhe vertical column is secured to the under side ot' the box B by bolts e, and in order to prevent any tendency to lateral movement the box is constructed with angular flanges or ribs f, into which tit the upper ends ofthe sections ofthe column, which are of corresponding angular form horizontally, and by which the two sections are securely held against lateral separation. rlhe body otl the column A might be circular in form, the upper part being polygonal for the purpose above mentioned; but it is represented as wholly of angular cross-section.
The construction ot' the box B with the angular tlangesfreceiving the upper end of the column is very advantageous, as the columnsections are thereby held against lateral separation, and no bolts are required for connectingthe two column-sections at their upperends.
The box B is constructed with a hinged cover, B', which may be secured by a common catch, g, and the box has inscriptions within its bottom, as shown clearly in Fig. 4, which, in connection with a pointer or index, h, projecting from the pipe F, provide for properly regulating the turning of the pipe and plug. The said pipe is suitably supported in bearings t', and is provided at its upper end with a screw-thread,j, providingt'or the ready connection of a hose.
rlhe construction of the cock with its hollow open-ended plug and the stand or delivery pipe extending upward therefrom forms no part of the present invention, but is the subject ot' another application for Letters Patent.
.By my invention I furnish a light casing which may be manufactured at small cost, and which is so combined with a stop-cock as to properly support and sustain the latter. The same construction is applicable to the casings or columns of hydrants.
Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The combination, in the easing ofa servicecock, street-washer connection, or hydrant, of a vertical divided column, the upper part of which is of rectangular or polygonal cross-section, and a box to the under side of which said vertical column is bolted, and which is con structed with angular lianges or ribs receiving the divided angular corners of the upper end ot'said column and preventing the lateral separation of the two sections thereof, substantially as specitied.
2. The combination ot' the casing composed of two vertically -united column-sections, a hollow box to the bottom ot' which said sections are secured and by which they are held against lateral separation, a cock secured and supported between said column-sections, as described, and a pipe or rod connected with the cock-plug and extending upward between said sections into said box, substantially as specified.
