SHUTTER-BOWER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 468,941, dated February 16, 1892. Application filed June 15, 1891. Serial No. 896,344. (No model.)

To all whom it nuty concern- Be it known that I, ALBERT IsKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lancaster, in the county of Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shutter-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The object of this invention is to provide an improved shutter-fastening and shutterbowing device consisting of a bolt, a catch and staple engaging therewith, and parts locking said bolt either in its inner or its outer position or in any intermediate position for bowing, the said bolt consisting of two parts hinged together and being otherwise adapted to the operations above described.

My invention consists, therefore, in the construction and combination of devices,hereinafter particularly set forth and shown.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a front elevation of a bolt and socket embodying my invention, the bolt being within its casing and the contiguous parts of the shutters being also shown. Fig.2 represents a rear elevation of the said devices,

. the bolts being shot, the shutters being indicated by dotted lines. Fig. 3 represents a plan view of the same when the shutters are bowed. Fig. 4 represents a rear elevation of the devices as shown in Fig. 3. Fig. 5 represents a detail view of the bolt and the sliding locking-piece detached therefrom. Fig. 6 represents a detail rear view of the levercatch, and Fig. 7 represents a bottom plan view of my bolt and socket.

A and A designate the two shutters, the former having a bolt-casing B attached to it, the latter having similarly attached a socket C. The casing B contains a long flat bolt D, and has under the latter a long slot 12. The horizontal flange forming the outer limit or boundary of said slot has several notches formed in its edge, every one of these being adapted to fit and interlock with a shoulder e, projecting from the shank E of a sliding catch or locking-piece E. The upper part of this piece is broadened and sets freely in a recess F of the said bolt. At the lower end of the said shank the said piece isprovided with a projecting handle or grasping-lug E The function of this piece is to move the said bolt backward and forward, as desired, and to lock it in any position to which it may thus be moved. For this purpose one of the said notches (marked d) is at the rear end of the said slot and locks the bolt wholly within its casing. Another notch d is far enough forward to hold the bolt'when shot into the socket O, the shutter being closed. Other notches d d d are farther forward and hold the bolt when it is so far out that a hinge H in said bolt is beyond the casing. These notches d d at d d constitute catches for the sliding piece.- This hinge connects end to end thetwo sections. of which the said bolt consists- WVhile the said hinge is within the casing the bolt is rigid throughout; but when the hinge is protruded the outer section D of the said hinge may be bent at an angle for bowing the shutters. By moving the sliding piece from one of the notches cl (2 d to another the opening may be increased or lessened, as required. The upper part of the front of this bolt-section D is cut away and provided with downwardly-extending recesses k k arranged in longitudinal series for interlocking with a lug Z on the inner face of alever-catch L, pivoted within the said socket O. The rear end of the said lever-catch protrudes through the corresponding end of the said socket, and when the said rear end of the said catch is raised by hand the said lug engages with whichever one of the recesses 76 k k may be below it, this depending on the angle or degree of bowing of the shutters and the consequent distance between them.

1. A bolt consisting of two sections hinged together end to end, one section being provided with a recess F for a sliding locking pieceand the other section being provided with a series of recesses, in combination with a catch for engaging the said recesses and a series of fixed catches for engaging the said sliding piece, substantially as set forth.

2. In combination with a shutter-bowing bolt having a series of recesses, a catch pivoted to the opposite shutter and movable at will into'and out of engagement therewith,

and a spring bearing against the said catch to hold it in either positionagainst accidental.
