UNITED STATES DANIEL PATENT OFFICE.
OULTON MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.-
COMBINED SOFA AND BED.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 468,930, dated February 16, 1892. Application filed February 11, 1891. Serial No. 381,061. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL L. OULTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Haverhill,in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Sofa and Bed, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of furniture known as a combination sofa and bed and the invention consists in certain details of construction hereinafter fully described,-
and set forth in the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the frame arranged as a sofa. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing it as a bed. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section when arranged as a sofa. Fig. 4 is a similar section when opened out as a bed. Figs. 5 to S are detail views of various parts. Fig. 9 is a face view of the pillowframe. Fig. 10 is a cross-section of the same, taken on line a: 00 of Fig. 9, showing it in its lowest position. Fig. 11 is a similar view showing the pillow partly raised.
The frame consists of three parts, viz: the lower or supporting frame A, the bottom or settee frame 13, and the back frame C. These three frames are secured together by two hinges, the construction of which is best illustrated in Fig. 5, and consists of three arms or straps D E F, enlarged at their upper ends, through which a pin is passed to connect them together and upon which they are all free to turn. The long arm D is secured to the lower frame A, the arm E to the bottom frame 13 and is at its upper end formed with two eyes 6 e, to which the pillow is secured as hereinafter described, and the arm F is secured to the back frame C. By means of a hinge thus constructed all the frames can be folded one upon another, or the back frame can be placed at nearly right angles to the other frames, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, or parallel thereto, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4, or at any angle between the two positions as may be desired, while at the same time the hinge supports one end of the pillows by the eyes e, and the bottom or settee frame B can be raised so as to place the bedclothes under the same or remove them therefrom, as may be required.
Vhen used as a sofa, the back frame C is held at the desired inclination by means 'of notched and weighted arms G G, (one of which is shown detached in Fig. 7.) Each armis provided with a hinge-pieceg, which is secured to the bottom frame A, the upper and rear portion of the arm being provided with a series of notches or recesses g, either of which is caused to engage with a small angle-piece H, secured to the back of the back frame 0, a weight g on the other end of the arm G causing the notched portion to come in contact with the angle-piece H. A cord 1 is secured to the weightsg and passed through eyes "i to the front of the frame A, so that when it is desired to lower the back frame C a person draws upon' the cord I in front of.
the sofa, which raises the weights 9 and thus throws the upperends of the arms/GG back, so as to be out of contact with the angle-pieces H, and the back frame C is free to fall until the cord 1 is released and the angle-piece takes into another notch or is lowered entirely down, as shown in Fig. 2.
When used as a bed, as shown in Fig. 2, the back frame C is supported by legs J, that are operated automatically in the following manner: Each of the legs is connected to a longitudinal bar K, that passes'from end to end of the frame C, and is so mounted that it is free to turn. At or about the center of this bar K is secured a plate L, (shown in two portions in Fig. 8,) which is cut through on one side for about half its length and the portion Z bent at right angles to the main portion. To the portion Z is pivoted abar or rod M, supported near its center by an eye m, secured to a cross-bar N, and at its inner end by an eye m. Upon this rod is secured a washer n, and between the washer and the eye at 1s interposed a spiral spring P, so that the action of the spring is to keep the bar M drawn to fold the legs on a line with the frame C, as shown in Fig. 1; but where the frame C is lowered the end of the bar or rod M comes int-o'contact with a wedge-shaped piece Q, secured to the back of the frame A (see Fig. 4) and the rod is forced rearward, thereby turning the bar K and lowering the legs to the position shown in Figs. 2 and 4, and as soon as the frame 0 is again raised the pressure on the end of the bar M is released and the spring P draws the legs .I up. I
The pillow-frames each consist of two circular end pieces R, cut flat on one side (see Flgs. and 11) and connected together bya suitable frame 7 Upon the flat surface of the end pieces are secured plates S, which are provided with hooks s s,-and on one side is an additional hook .9 These hooks are for attaching the pillows to the frames, either to form a sofa or bed.
At each end of the front of the frame B is secured a short standard '1, provided at its upper end with a slot 25, and adjacent thereto is a spring-catch U, so that when it is desired to secure the pillows to the frame B to form a sofa the hook s at one end of the pillow is lnserted into the eye e of the hinge and other hooks s in the eye If in the standard T. The pillow is then brought over so that the hook s will enter the spring-catch U, and the pillow is secured in place. To release the pillow the arm n is depressed, when the hooks will be free to be raised out of the spring-catch. The frame 0 is also fitted with standards T,
so that when used as a bed the pillows are by the hooks s secured to the two standards T, andto the eyes e e of the hinge, the hooks s resting against the ends of the framesB 0.,
In order to be able to adjust the pillows to any desired inclination, I secure to the front portion of the pillows a bar V by means of two arms or hangers v, and to the bar V is p voted a ratchet-bar W, that passes through an opening in a plate X, secured to two crosspillow, so that when the rear of the pillow is raised the hooks s 8 form fulcrums, upon which it turns, and the bar V,- being hung loosely, keeps in contact with the end of the frame, so that the ratchet-teeth ride. over the plate X until the pillow has been raised to the desired height, where it will be re-' tained by a tooth of the bar W coming into contact with the edge of the plate X. To release the ratchet-bar W, so as to lower the pillow, the cord to is drawnupon, which raises the ratchet-bar from the plate X and allows the pillow to fall, a spiral spring Y, connected.
at one end to the framer and atits other end to the bar V, assisting to return it to its noron their lower portion, angle-pieces H, se-
cured to the lower edge of the back frame 0,
and cord I, passing through eyes i to the front of the sofa, substantially as set forth.
3. In combination with a combined sofa and bed, the legs J, attached to barK, mounted in frame (I, so as to partly rotate, the angleplate L, secured to the bar K near its center, bar M, one end of which is secured to said angle-plate and carried by eyes-m m on the cross-piece N, a collar 91, mounted upon said bar M, and a spiral spring interposed between the collar n and eye 'm', and a wedge-shaped piece Q, secured to the frame A, whereby when the back is lowered the end of the bar M will come in contact with the piece Q and be forced rearward, thereby lowering the legs,
and, when the back is raised the spiral spring will force the bar M forward, thereby raising the legs, as set forth.
- 4. In a combined sofa and bed, the standards T, each having an eye If, in combination with a three-armed hinge for connecting the lower frame A, bottom frame E, and back frame 0, one of the outer arms of said hinge having eyes e e for supporting the pillow, provided with hooks when used as a bed, substantially as shown and described. bars m x, that extend from end to end of the 5. In a combined sofa and bed, the standard T, having an eye 25, in combination with a hinge having three arms, the outer one of which is provided with eyes 6 e, and the springcatch U for supporting the pillow when used as a sofa, substantially as shown and described. V
6. In combination with a combined sofa and bed, a pillow-frame consisting of two circular end pieces R, connected together by frame 7, the bar V, attached to the side pieces by rods 1), rack-bar W, pivoted to said bar V, and the cross-bars w m, plate X, and spring Y, all arranged and operated substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony .whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, on this 23d day of January, A. D. 1891.
