WILLIAM E. BROCK, OF PLAINFIELD, NEV JERSEY.
PORTABLEBUILDING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 468,78 5, dated February 16, 1892. l Application iiled April '7, 1891, Serial No. 387,977. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, W'ILLIAM E. BROCK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Plaineld, in the county ot' Somerset and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Buildings, ot' which the following is a specication.
My invention relates to the construction of buildings in sections; and it consists, essentially, of the novel means hereinafter described for uniting 'the sections to each other, whereby I obtain various advantageous results.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents a front elevation of two sections of a building-wall embodying my invention, with portions of the boards broken away to expose underlying parts. Fig. 2 represents a horizontal section on the line a: at, Fig. 1, on a larger scale than in said ligure. F1g. 3 represents a vertical section on theV li-ne :15' a', Fig. 2. Fig. 4. represents a vertical section on the line y y, Fig. 3. Fig. 5 represents a face view of a bolt-clamp detached. Fig. 6 represents a horizontal section on the line a e', Fig. l, on a larger scale than in said figure. Figs. 7 and 8 illustrate two modifications of the bolt-clamp.
Similar letters of reference indicate similar parts.
The letters A. B indicate the two sections of the wall, which are divided from each other in a Vertical plane, and which wall-sections may be constructed in any suitable dimensions and of any desirable material. In the present example they consist of a frame composed of two parallel beams A A', extending vertically the entire length thereofl and joined together at their ends and at suitable joints throughout their length by crossbeams B' B', which are secured to the upright parallel beams by nails, screws, or otherwise. The outside of said frame-sections is provided with horizontal weather-boards D D, secured in place by tongue-and-groove joints in a well-known manner, and the inside thereof is finished4 with inclined clap boards, as shown at C C, Fig. l. Windows F, as shown in Fig. l, may be constructed in said sections, as also doors at any desired parts thereof.
The letter E designates the metallic boltclamp, provided with an elbow E', having an open slot G therein for the introduction of one bolt b' and a hole or opening CZ in the dat portion thereof to receive a bolt b and having the portion adjacent to the opening countersunk and forming a recess or seat d' for a washer cl2, as shown in Figs. 3, 4, and 5, and which recess prevents the displacement of the bolt h when it is applied to use in joining the vertical sections of the building together.
In Fig. 6 I have shown a horizontal beam A2, the end of which is fitted between the vertical beams or joists A' and secured by a screw-bolt b2, the head of this bolt bearing against a plate F.2 and the inner end thereof having a nut Zt fitted in a nut-hole 7.5.
In order to facilitate the adjustment of the screw-bolts b' in the bolt-clamp E, the open slot G is beveled at its outer end, as clearly shown in Figs. 4 and 5.
On the elbow portion E' of the bolt-clamp E are formed spurs g, which, being forced into the beam, prevent the bolt-clamp from moving when the bolt is adjusted therein when the sections are applied to use.
In the modification shown in Fig. '7 asingle bolt l) is used, and it, as well as the bolt-clamp E, is formed with a strap S, whereby it is attached to the proper part, while in the modiication shown in Fig. 8 the two bolts l) b' are used and the bolt-clamp E is attached. to the proper part, also, by a strap S, formed thereon.
In order to join the wall-sections A B together, the screw-bolts b b are arranged in the cross-beams B' B at suitable intervals and held in position at their inner ends by means of nuts t, iitted l in holes z" in said beams, while the outer ends of this series of screwbolts b b are permanently adjusted in the elbow portion of the bolt-clamp and held therein ready for use. The other series of the bolts b' b' are secured in nuts h, fitted in the nutholes h', and the outer ends adjusted in the tapering opening G, formed in the bolt-clamp E, and the washer d fitted in the recess d, formed in the flat portion of the bolt-clamp E and held in position by means of the washer surrounding the said bolt, and by screwing the bolt b' up the sections are firmly and se- IOO curely united together. The nuts 72, are usually in shape of a cylinder and extend vertically through the bealns of the proper sections.
In carrying out my invention I place a beam T, of suitable width, between the sections, at
the rear portion thereof, for the purpose of creating` a space between the sections to permit screwing the bolts together by means of a wrench, and over the front portion of said space, when the parts are all adjusted, I place a suitable ornamental cap or covering V, which may be made of any suitable design.
Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure b v Letters Patent, is-
1. In combination With the sections of a portable building, a bolt attached to one of the sections, a bolt-clamp attached to the other or adjacent section and constructed with an open slot to receive the shank of the bolt, and a recess to receive the bolt-head or a Washer thereunder, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. In combination with the sections of a portable building, the two bolts attached to adjacent sections, the bolt-clamp attached to either section and constructed with a hole to receive the shank of one bolt, an open slot to receive the shank of the other bolt, and a recess adjacent to the slot to receive the bolthead or a Washer thereunder, substantially 3o as and for the purpose described.
