- This invention relates to that class of gymnasium appliances usually known as jumping-stands, a pair of which support a light horizonally-arranged gage-rod and are employed toindicate or gage the height to which a party exercising may jump, kick, or vault, the object of the present improvement being to provide a simple, strong, and convenient arrangement of such stands embodying the features of an easy and convenient adjustment of the gage supporting devices, combined with an accurate and substantial attachment of the same at the required adjustment.

JUMPlNG-STAND.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 468,625, dated February 9, 1892. Application tiled April 16, 1891. Serial No. 389,215. (No model.)

Be it known that I, FREDERICK MEDART, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gymnasium .IurnpingStands, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to that class of gymnasium appliances usually known as jumping-stands, a pair of which support a light horizonally-arranged gage-rod and are employed toindicate or gage the height to which a party exercising may jump, kick, or vault, the object of the present improvement being to provide a simple, strong, and convenient arrangement of such stands embodying the features of an easy and convenient adjustment of the gage supporting devices, combined with an accurate and substantial attachment of the same at the required adjustment. I attain such objects by the construction and arrangement of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a jumpingstand complete constructed in accordance with my present invention; Fig. 2, a detail elevation of the oppositeside ofthe stand; Fig. 3, a detail elevation at right angles to Fig. 1; and Fig. et, an enlarged horizontal section at line a: x, Fig. 1.

Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the supporting-base, of any usual and convenient form, preferably of a cast-metal skeleton censtruction, as shown,and provided with a central open-sided-sccket formation 2 to receive, and in which is bolted, the vertical standard 3, preferably of the square form shown, and having the respective high and low scales 4 and 5 on opposite sides. At one side of said standard there is formed a vertical groove or recess b for the reception of the eX- tension rod or bar 7 that carries the bracketpin 8, which supports one end of the usual horizontal gage-rod employed in pole vaulting, high kicking, dsc. is provided with a metal cap 9, through which the rod or bar 7 passes and is guided. The lower end of the ewgtension rod or bar 7 is attached bylugs 10 or otherusual means to the adjusting sleeve 11, embracing the main standard 3, and provided witha verticallyarranged slot or orifice l2, that receives the clamping-wedge 13, having top and bottom enlargements 14 to limit its movement and prevent disengagement. This construction affords a very simple, convenient, and effective means for adjusting the appliance to any desired height, it being only necessary to lift or lower the sleeve l1 to the required height, and With a movementof the finger push the wedge 13 up to lock the parts rmly in place.

In the construction illustrated the scale 4L indicates at the top edge of the sleeve 11 the vertical adjustment of the upper bracket-pin S, and the scale 5 that of the lower pin 15.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a gymnasium jumping-stand, the combination of the main standard, the vertical1yadjustable sleeve 11, carrying the horizontal gage-rod support and provided with a vertical slot 12, and the locking-wedge13, substantially as sei forth.
2. In agymnasiumjumping-stand, the combination of the main standard, the verticallyadjustable sleeve l1, carrying the horizontal gage-rod support and provided with a vertical slot 12, the lockingwedge 13, and the extension-rod 7, attached to the sleeve l1 and ad.- j ustable therewith, substantially as set forth.
