W. HUEY.
GARBAGE GART.
No. 468,316. Patented Feb. 2, 1892.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
\VILLIAM I-IUEY, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND, ASSIGNOR TO HENRY S. BREWVINGTON AND GEORGE R. COOPER, OF SAME PLACE.
GARBAGE-CART.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 468,316, dated February 2, 1892.
Application filed April 15, 1891. Serial No. 389,037- (No model.)
To all whmn (It may concern:
Be it known that I, \VILLIAM HUEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dumping and Garbage Carts; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descrip-' tion of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in dumping and garbage carts, which will be hereinafter more particularly described and pointed out.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a cart with the improvements. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section. Fig. 3 is an end view.
A is the body of the cart, having a sloping bottom A.
B is an inside gate pivoted to the sides of the body at Z). An outside gate B is hinged at its upper edge at b. The gate B is preferably made of metal. The gate B may be of wood, properly strengthened. The bottom edges of these two gates are connected by pivoted rods O at o and c. The outside gate B is to be secured by latches D D, which are pivoted to an upright bar D, at the upper end of which there is pivoted a lever cl, which is pivoted to the gate B at b. The movements of the lever d operate the two latches D D to insert'them in or remove from the keepers d d. Thetop A of body A slopes at the same angle as the bottom A from the rear gate to a, from which point there is a level door or lid a, hinged to the top A. On one edge of the lid a is secured a lever a, which extends a short distance beyond the line of junction of lid and body. To this end of the lever a is attached a cord f, which passes through a leading-loop g and is secured to a vertical guide-rod e, which projects above a sliding step e.
E e is a stationary step lower than sliding step e. The purpose of this arrangement is to aid the carter when he has both hands employed in carrying a bucket of anything which is to be emptied into the cart. By stepping on E first he will next place one foot upon the step e and force it down, by which movement the cord f will pull down the end of le ver a and raise the lid a, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2. The carter can then use both hands to empty the bucket into the cart, and by removing his foot from c the weight of the lid a will cause it to drop back to its place.
The operation of the twogates is as follows: The load within the body will rest against the inner gate B, which, having the rods 0 on both lower edges, will be supported in its vertical position by the outer gate B, which is held by the latches D D. To dump the load, it is only necessary to depress the outer end of lever (Z, when the weight of the load will itself force the inner gate B outwardly and by the rods 0 shove the outer gate to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2. The roller shown in section at F in Fig. 2 is for the purpose of hauling into the cart from below any heavy article too large to be put in from the front.
I claim- 1. I11 a dumping and garbage cart, the slop ing bottom, in combination with an inner and outer gate connected together, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. In a dumping and garbage cart, the combination of the sliding step, guide-rod, cord, and cover to the cart, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
\VILLIAM llUEY.
