MODE, OF PREPARING CHEWING-TOBACCO.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 46,826. dated March 14, 1865.

Be it known'that I, HENRY D. SMITH, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Mode of Manufacturing and Arranging Chewing-Tobacco; and I do hereby declare that the following is a true, full, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawreference marked ing-tobacco in the following manner: I take a quantity of fine-cut tobacco and incase it in tobacco-leaves, after which I compress it into a solid sheet, the inside of which is composed of cut tobacco and the outside or coating of tobacco-leaves. I then cut it up into small pellets or chews and put them up in packages for use. i

To enable consumers and others to understand the objects of my invention, I will proceed to describe it.

The cardinal points are economy and cleanliness, as tobacco put up in this form is not liable to accummulate tobacco-dust in the pocket or box, as they will retain their solidity and form even when they become dry, thereby putting an end to the great waste which cannot be avoided in the old way of putting up tobacco. It also obviates the necessity of pinching off pieces, a part of which either falls to the ground or upon the beard or clothing of the consumer.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A tobacco pellet or chew made out of out tobacco incased and compressed between tobacco-leaves or their equivalent, as a new article of manufacture.
