To all whom it may concern,.-

Be it known that I, ALEXANDER D. JOsLN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Devices for Holding and Outting Tickets, Checks, cbc., of which the following is a specification.

This invention has been devised more especially for the use of railroad-conductors in carrying the combined checks issued to the passengers for cash fares and the vouchers returned to the company by the conductor showingthe amount of such fare and for severing such check from the voucher at the time the fare is paid. It is, however, adapted to use for other purposes and by people other than railroad-conductors- The invention is adapted to be used with a form of combined check and voucher now in use and which is intended to be severed along a central line and is provided along said line with three series of figures, one representing dollars, another dimes, and another cents. In the use of this combined check and voucher the conductor first punches from the several series of figuresthose numerals which will serve to denote the amount of fare paid by the passenger, the figures thus punched not being wholly severed from the check, however, so that when the check and voucher are severed from each other the figures so punched will still adhere to the check. This causes both the voucher and the check to show the amount of fare, the check having the figures and the voucher having recesses from which the figures were punched or cut. In punching these numerals the conductor is obliged to usea separate device and ordinarily one specially constructed for the purpose.

In my invention I have endeavored to provide in a single structure a holder in which a sufficient supply of these combined checks and vouchers may be placed to serve for a trip, a straight edge along which the two parts may be severed from each other, and also amovable knife or severing-point whereby the proper gures can be torn or severed;

The nature of my improvement will be better understood from the drawings accompany ing the specification and forming a part thereof, and in which- Figure l is a plan of the invention. Fig.2 is an end view. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. l. Fig. et is a bottom view, and Fig. 5 shows the combined check and voucher employed with the invention after the same have been severed.

In said drawings, Arepresents the cashfare check which is issued to the passenger, and B represents the conductors voucher. These are printed upon a single piece of paper and contain any appropriate printing matter. They are intended to be severed along a central lnc,and at one side of this line are three series of figures, as shown at a, one series being intended to represent dollars, another dimes, and another cents, these numbers being intended to be severed as hereinafter set forth. It will be desirable, of course, that each check and voucher be correspondingly numbered and blanks may be left for any other memoranda deemed necessary-such, for instance, as the number of the train, the date, and the points between which the passenger travels. A series of these combined checks and vouchers are assembled in a pile or block and placed in my improved holder, which consists of a rectangular or other suitably-shaped frame O, having bottom ledges c. Springs D D are adapted to press the package upwardly to keep them in contact with the severing devices, and also preferably with corner-guards d, to prevent any curling up of the corners of the paper at the side which is least protected. This frame is made of a size suitable to be carried in the pocket and is as free as possible of projections calculated to catch the'y clothing and be objectionable in the pocket.

Vith the holder I employ suitable devices both for severing the cheek from the voucher and for punching or tea-ring out the numbers :representing the fare. These devices as I prefer to construct them are made as follows: A straight piece of metal E is removably secured to the holder and extends across the open space within the holder and preferably from top to bottom thereof. The edge e of this part E acts as a cutting-edge in severing the check from the voucher. The part E is also provided with a longitudinal guide-slotf, in which travels a slide F, which is provided on top with a button G, whereby it may be moved along the slot, and also with a sever- IOO ing-point g projectingin front o'f the edge e, as illustrated. At one side the frame C is provided With an enlargement H, intended to afford room for the severing-point g, where the latter will be out of operating position during the severing of the check from the voucher. The straight edge E is hinged t0 the frame C, and preferably at the enlargement H, as shown at It, and its opposite end -is bent down so as to engage With the catch j. This permits the lifting of the straight edge when the tickets are to be put into the holder.

The operation of the invention is as follows: A series of the checks and vouchers having been properly placed iii the holder, we will suppose that a passenger pays the conductor $3.59. The conductor then moves the sliding knife into appropriate positions Where he can sever by means of the knife g the figure from the series of numbers representing the dollars, and the figure 5 from the series representing dimes, and the figure 9 from thc series representing cents. In Fig. l the knife is shown in position for severing the 5 from the dimes, and 3 is represented as having been already severed from the dollars. In making these severatio'ns of the numerals the conductors take hold of the edge m of the voucher B and turn it up to right angles, forming a bend at the straight edge, and thereby cause the knife g to act4 and sever the gure over which it may be resting at the time. This operation is repeated With each of the figures to be severed. The sliding knife is then moved up into the enlargement H, and the voucher is then completely torn from the check along the straight-edge, and is then cared for by the conductor, and the check A is slipped out from under the straight-edge and given to the passenger. The process described Will cause the check and voucher to present the appearance given in Fig. 5, the check having the severed nuinerals adhering to it, as stubs seen at p, While the voucher has corresponding recesses r, as clearly indicated. For the convenience of accountants in checking up from the vouch! ers I prefer to provide the latter With another series of figures corresponding to those previously mentioned, as shown at 0.

One benefit attending my invention is that no necessity exists for the provision in the ticket of perforated severing-lines. The numeral-stubs p are by reason of this feature much less likely to be lost or torn from the checkV than Where the checks are provided With the usual perforations along the severing-lines. The device is light, easily carried in the pocket, and saves the necessity of employing a separate punch for severing the numerals. In case the fare paid is a half-fare an additional severation similar to those used in the case of the numerals is made at the Word Half.

I claiml. The holder for railroad tickets, checks, vouchers, etc., consisting of a frame adapted to receive a series of the tickets, &c., a severing edge along which the same may be torn, and a movable severing point or punch projecting in front of said severing-edge, substantially as set forth.
