To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, J OHN F, 'OHMER and HARRY J. SreLnY, citizens ofthe United States, residing at" Dayton, in'the county of Montgomery and V State of Ohio, have I invented certain new and useful Improvements in Transfer-Issuing Machines; and we do declare the following tobe a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such-as will enable others 'skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the aocompanying draw ings, and to the letters and figures' of "reference marked thereony-which form apart of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in transfer orticket issuing machines such as-is I described and claimed in our pending: application, filed October 2, 1915, Serial Number 53,750.
The present improvements relate to certain new and useful improvements for permitting a free flow or feeding movementof the transfers-or tickets 1 from the machine, and to means'which compels the proper withdrawal of the severeditrans'fers whereby a complete and-satisfactory issuance of each transfer from the machineis insured.
The invention consists' of a discharge spout or mouth piece i extending forward from the machine and adapted to receive a paper strip, and by having a finger opening thereinthe transfer'is accessible and is easily removed.

Referring more particularly to Fig. 1 of the drawings, 1 and 2 designate the side frame plates which are united to a base 3 from which downwardly extends an apertured' boss 4 supported upon a column 5. The side frame plates 1 and 2 are suitably connected by a cross frame 6 upon which the I printing wheels are mounted and a plate? on which the paper severing meansis mounted; The cross frame 6 is provided with type wheel 8 and other type wheel 10,t'he former type wheel being-on shaft 11 and the latter type wheel beingon shaft 9, both shafts being suitably journaled in the frame work of the machine.

This sleeve receives a spindle 18 and the ends of said sleeve have disks 14 between which the roll of paper isconfined. The web 16 from said roll is led in contact with the roller platen 17 which is mounted upon swinging plates 18, the shaft 19 of which is mounted in adjustable bearings on a vertically movable printing frame 15. The printing frame 15 has projections 20 which carry upper and lower anti-rollers 21. These rollers 21 travel in vertical races 22 which are inclosed by. guides 23 attached to the side plates 1 and 2. The type are inked by an inking roller 24which is mounted on a shaft journaled in side plates 25 which 'are'pivoted on'the-shaft of the roller platen. Pins 26 are mounted in the races 22 and engage the upper roller 21 to shift the frame 15 and the platen roller carriedthereby to move said platen roller from the type wheels after each impression is made. 27 and 28 designatefeed rollers through which'the web of aper is fed. The shaft 29 of the upper feed roller 27 is journaled in the ends of slides 31 which move in guides 31 The shaft 30 of the lower feed roller is j ournaled in theside plates land 2 and carries a pinion 32which meshes with a gear 33. The shaft 34 of the gear 33 is journaled in a frame 35.
The pawl 36 is carried by the gear 33 and 3 ingframe 0f the printing mechanism.
The said frame 15. carries a projection 40 which alternately engages upper and lower shoulders 41 on-the lower end of the rack and thus the rack is reciprocated according to the movement ofthe frame 15.
The printing frame 15 is operated from a foot-treadle which is not shown in the drawings nor is it necessary to describe the machine in detail. The manner of operating {the same is .fully shown and described in our pending application. The various printing wheels and the manner of their operation is also there fully described. The means for cutting the strip of paper. into tickets or transfers is also fully described in our pending application. It is here necessary to say that it consists of a. knife or blade 42 which is, slidably-vmounted on the cross plate 7 and is movable in guides 43. The lower edge 44 of the opening 45 in the 7 plate 7 cotiper'ates with said knife in cutting the paper into definite lengths to make the transfers 0rv tickets which have previously been printed in the machine; Springs 46 draw the knife downwardly across said opening, said springs being connected to the knife at one end and to the cross plate 47 at the other end. 'A crank 48, shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, elevates the knife against the tension of the springs] The crank 48 is mounted upon a shaft 49 having bearings 50 said bearings being mounted upon the plate 7. A crank 51 is mounted on the shaft 49 and is operated thereby. A projection 53 on the vertically movable printing frame 15 directly engages the crank 51 and operates the same. When the knife or blade 42 is elevatedby the crank 48, it is held in an elevated position by a latch 52 pivoted on the shaft 11. The end 54 of the crank 51 is engaged by said latch 52. The extended end 55 of the latch 52 is adapted to be engaged by a stud 56 on an arm 57 carried by the printing frame 15. l/Vhen said printing frame 15 reaches its lowermost position, the stud 56 engages the extension 55 and rocks the latch 52 and thereby releases the knife 42 so that the springs 46 and 59 will draw said knife and'the clamping plate 58 in the direction ofthe paper which is to be cut to; form the transfer. When the paper is thus severed, the transfer .made therefrom is heldzat its end by the cross" plate 47 and a'clamping plate 58, and may be drawn out by the passenger. The clamping platef58 is movable in the guides 43 and is controlle' 59 and the crank-48, saidclampingplate being elevated and lowered simultaneously with the kni'fe 42. When the paper strip is fed by the feed rollers 27 and 28 preparatory to each cutting operatiomit enters'the delivery mouth60 formed by upper and lower transverse mouth pieces 61 and 62, the former of whichis secured across the upper front of the casingto the side plates 1, and 2 and thefllatterof which .is secured to adoor 73 of the casing. The said plate is moved outwardly-from this position at, the endof e'ach upward movement of the printing frame15 and before the ticket is issued, and is moved 7 inwardly after the ticket is issued when the frame 15 reaches the limit of its downward movement. Suchmovement is given said plate from an arm 65 which is slotted at its free end to loosely fit over across .pin'66 on a bracket 67 which issecured to said plate 63. The arm 65 is fixed to'a shaft 68 in the side plates of the frame. Toran end of this shaft 68 there is fixed an angular lever 69 having an elongated slot 7 O therein.
The crank 51 hereinbefore referred to as being on shaft 49- carries a stud71 which projects through a curved slot 72 in the adjacent side plate .2 and into the slot 70 of the lever 69. It will, therefore, be seen that a movement of the crank 51 from the position shown in Fig. 4 will rock the shaft 68 to project the guard plate 63 outwardly. The crank 51 is elevated from the printing frame 15 by-the vertical projection '53qcarthe descent of the knife 42 and clamping plate 58 through the action of the springs 46 and 59 and the crank i8 and shaft 49.
It will be apparent from the foregoing description that the paper strip cannot be caught hold of and torn; in other words, it is inaccessible to the fingers until the printing and severing of each transfor or ticket is completed and it is in a position to be taken possession of by the passenger.
Having described our invention, we claim:
1. In a machine of the character specified, means for intermittently feeding a strip of paper, means for cutting said strip of paper at the end of each feeding operation thereof, and a plate movable to a position to cover the advanced end of said strip of paper simultaneously with each feeding operation and to a position to uncover the same at the completion of the cutting operation.
2. In a machine of the character specified, means for intermittently advancing a strip of paper from a roll, a guard plate adapted to cover the advanced end of said paper strip movable to such position simultaneously With the operation of the paper advancing means, a knife adapted to out said paper strip after each advancing operation, and means actuated during the cutting movement of said knife to move the guard plate to a position to uncover the severed transfer and permit of its removal.
3. In a machine of the character specified, a casing having a discharge spout, intermittent paper feeding devices adapted to feed a strip of paper into said spout, means adapted to out said paper at the end of each feeding operation, and means actuated before and after said paper feeding devices are operated to guard the end of the paper in said spout before it is cut and to enable access thereto after it is cut.
4. In a. machine of the character specified, a casing having a discharge spout, paper feeding means adapted to feed a strip of paper into said spout, severing means actuated subsequent to said feeding means to out said paper, and means actuated before and after said feeding means is operated to prevent the Withdrawal of the paper from said discharge spout until after it is cut.
5. In a machine of the character specified, a casing having a discharge spout adapted to receive a paper strip, means for intermittently feeding said paper into said spout, a plate movable in and out of said spout to guard the paper until it is cut, means for cutting said paper when it is advanced into said spout, and means for actuating said paper cutting means and said plate before and after said paper cutting means is operated.
6. In a machine of the character specified, a casing having a discharge spout adapted to receive a paper strip, means for intermittently advancing said paper into said spout, a plate movable in and out of said spout to prevent the paper being pulled out of said spout until it is cut, paper cutting devices, crank and rock-shaft connections between said plate and cutting devices, and means for actuating said cutting means and therewith the crank and shaft connections.
7. In a machine of the character specified, a casing having a ticket discharge opening inclosed by two outwardly projected lips, said lips having centrally disposed finger openings and the lowermost one of said lips having a rearWardly and downwardly inclined portion forming the throat of said opening, paper feeding devices adapted to feed a strip of paper through said throat and into said opening, a knife for cutting each length of paper fed into said opening, and a plate within said opening movable horizontally to an outer position while the paper is being fed into said opening and to an inward position to expose the end of the ticket after the paper has been fed into said pipening and severed, substantially as speci- In testimony whereof we affix our signatures, in presence of two witnesses.
