WITNESSES- INVENTDR PJM zf@ vgfw M anw UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOI-IN MCGRAIN, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO FREDERICK LENTHE, OF SAME PLACE.
CRUT-CH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 467,675, dated January 26, 1892. Application iiled April l0, 1891. Serial No. 388,358. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom t 'may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN MGGRAIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Crutches, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a side elevation of my improved crutch, and Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the upper end thereof.
The object of my invention is to provide a crutch which is an improvement in that type of crutches which have springs interposed between the upper ends of the side bars and the head ofthe crutch, and which shall be simple in construction and cheap in rst cost, and which will relieve the shoulder of the user of the full force of the jar incident to throwing his weight thereon.
To this end my invention consists in the construction and combination of parts hereinafter described, and pointed out definitely in the claim.
Referring to the parts by letters, A A represent the two side bars of the crutch, which side bars meet and are secured together by any appropriate means near their lower ends.
A represents the hand-piece, which eX- tends between and is secured to said side bars.
B represents a yoke having in its ends the vertical sockets l) b. The upper ends of the side bars enter and extend partly through said sockets, as shown, whereby the yoke serves to brace the side bars and to hold them in fixed positions relative to each other.
C represents the head or saddle, which may be of any approved construction. Secured rigidly to said head and extending downward therefrom is the keeper D, having a `vertical slot d, as shown. This keeper enters a ver-v tical slot b in the yoke B, and it is secured therein by the pin b2, which is secured to the yoke and passes through the said slot d. The slot b is somewhat wider than the keeper, whereby said keeper andthe head to which it is secured may rock about a center in or near the pin b2. the head C are two/ sockets c c, located above the sockets b ZJ in the yoke, as shown. E E represent coil-springs, which are placed between the yoke and head, with their ends resting in the sockets h ZJ and c c respectively. When the weight of the user is thrown on the head, the springs are compressed and no jar of any consequence is felt. If the weight is thrown on the head either in front or behind the center, one side or the other of said head moves down the greater distance in consequence, the pin b2 serving as a pivot about which said rocking-motion takes place. Moreover, these results are secured and all the parts held in their proper relative positions by a very simple and cheap construction, containing the fewest possible parts.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a crutch having springs interposed between its head-piece and the upper ends of the side bars, the combination therewith of the yoke and a guiding and accommodating keeper which permits a vertical and rocking motion of the head-piece, substantially as and for the purpose described.
JOHN MCGRAIN.
