UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EUGENE S. XVI'IITOOMB, OF ORANGE, VERMONT.
WHIFFLETREE-HOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 467,667, dated January 26, 1892. Applibation filed May 28,1890. Serial No.353,515. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EUGENE S. WHITcoMB, a citizen of the United States, residing at Orange, in the county of Orange and State of Vermont, have invented a new and useful Improvement in WVhiffietree-Irons, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in devices for attaching the tug or trace of the harness to the whiffletree. Its object is to provide a whiftletree-iron to which the tug or trace can be immediately attached and detached with ease and that will not allow the tug or trace to become unhitched or detached while in use.
The accompanying drawings are referred to and made a part of this specification.
The drawings show myinvention attached to the whiffletree. I
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the devices embodying my invention, the same being attached to a Whittletree which is broken away to show more clearly said attachment; and Fig.2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same.
A represents the bolt screwed into the end of the whiffietree.
B is a projection bent at right angles, forming two sides of the inclosed space that holds the free end of the tug, the extended end of bolt A forming one side, and spring a forces .arm 0 against the extended end of bolt A,
forming the fourth side of such space.
C is an arm pivoted to the slotted end of projection B at b. a is a spring attached to projection B by a screw 6. Arm 0 is bent to form a cam to act on the spring, and the extended end forms another arm D.
To use my device, throw out arm 0, then press the tug against arm D, and put arm 0 back to its place, thereby sliding the tug onto the extended end of bolt A, where it is securely held by arm 0. To detach the tug from the whiflietree, throw out arm 0, which at the same time throws out arm D, which throws the tug off the bolt A.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A whiffletree hook comprising a screwthreaded bolt for attachment to the end of the whiftletree and having a projecting head at its opposite end in the same plane as the bolt and an L-shaped depending portion bifurcated to form bearings for a pivoted angular tongue, in combination with said tongue, the outer end of which bears upon the projecting head when the hook is in its closed condition, and a spring bearing upon said tongue to hold it either open or closed, substantially as described.
EUGENE S. HITCOMB.
