BUTTON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 467,663, dated January 26,1892.
` Application lled May 1,1891. Serial No. 391,312. (No modell) To @ZZ whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE B. KEPLINGEE, va citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Buttons, whichis fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a top or plan View of my button with a portion of the top plate out away..
Fig. 2 is the bottom of the button, with the post or shank removed. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken at the line 3 3, Fig. l. Fig; 4 is a transverse sectional View taken at the line 4.- 4, Fig. 1; and Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view taken at the line 5 5, Fig. 3.
This invention relates to the same adjustable button shown in my application, Serial `No. 386,965, and the post or shank is made like the one shown and claimed in said application.
My improvement, which is made the subject-matter of this specification, consists in making a separate hub, which is inserted in the bottom disk-plate of the button, through which the post or shank is inserted into the button and in which the recesses are made 30 for locking the post or shank in the button,
said post or shank being secured in the bottom disk-plate of the button, as hereinafter described, and extending below said diskplate, whereby I am enabled to have a long hub, which makes a double or long bearing for the post or shank of the button.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the top plate of the button; B, the bottom plate of the button; C, the spring; D, the detachable post or shank, and E the hub. The hub E is made separate, having a hole F extending through it of the shape shown in Fig. 2. This is adapted to receive the post or shank D of the button. There are two recesses H II in the upper edge of this post, in which the beveled edges I I of the head of the post or shank are received to lock the post or shank in the button. The hub Eis made with two shoulders J and K. It is inserted in a hole in the bottom plate B of the button till the edge of the bottom plate rests on the shoulder J. The shoulder K is then swaged down over the edge of the bottom plate B of the button, as clearly shown in Figs. 3 and 4, thereby fastening the hub firmly in the bottom plate B, as clearly shown in said figures. There are two bearings for the post or shank D of the button in the h ub, one at the bottom of the hub and one at the top of the hub, where it is locked. The spring C, which presses the shoulders I into the recesses ltI H in the hub and holds the post or shank locked in the button, may be of any construction which presses down upon the top of the post and holds it locked, but will yield sufficiently to admit of the post being turned to lock .and unlock it. The various parts of this button are made substantially the same as those shown in my former application for a patent, with the exception of the hub E, which I insert in this button for the purpose of giving the means for locking the post or shank of the button and furnish it with proper bearings to hold it properly in place independently of the construction of the spring or an additional plate or disk, as shown in my first application above specified. This long hub E, extending below the bottom plate or disk B, enables me to have a double or long bearing for the shank or post D without having the post or shank extending but a short distance into the button. By this means I am able to make a flat-top button and have the button kept in proper position on the post by means of the long hub, the top part of which is secured to the bottom disk of the button by the means above described. I deem it important that separable buttons shall be held properly in position on the post or shank.
Having fully described the construction and operation of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the the button, hub E, provided with two shoulders at or'near the top, the lower of said two shoulders being larger than the opening in the bottom of the button, the other shoulder being pressed down over the edge of the openbottom plate B of ICJO ing in the bottom plate, the hub extending below the bottom plate of the button and provided with the opening F, adapted to receive the detachable shank or post E and t closely about it, recesses H H, and detachable shank or post D, substantially as specified.
