D. M. SOMERS.
SPRING COVER.
Patented Jan. 26, 1 892 UNITED STATES PATENT .OFFICE.
DANIEL. M. SOMERS, OF BROOKLYN, NEWV YORK, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF, J L. SOMERS, G. A. SOMERS, W". H. ATKINSON, AND E. E. SOMERS, OF SAME PLACE.
SPRING-COVER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 467,647, dated January 26, 1892.
Application filed June 2, 1891. Serial No. 394.850. (N model.)
To all whom may concern.-
Be it known that I, DANIEL M. SOMERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn,
county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring-Covers, fully described and represented in the following specification and the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the same.
The object of the present invention is to provide a simple, cheap, and convenient spring-cover inwhich the cover and spring shall form a single complete construction and which shall be more durable and less liable to get out of order than those heretofore in use.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure l is a plan View of a powder-gun provided with my improved spring-cover. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan of the cover.
As shown, the body of the cover A is, as to its general construction, of a common form. Two pieces of sheet metal are riveted together to form the head 0!, of the cover. A piece of leather, cloth, or similar flexible material I) is secured between the two parts of the head, forming the body of the cover, the outer edges being held between a ring of metal 0 and a rim (Z, flanged over the ring 0, to secure the two parts together and the flexible body 1) between them.
In my improved construction the ring 0, which extends within the box or other receptacle to which the cover is to be applied, is provided with an inwardly-extending flange e, which, as shown in Fig. 2, is preferably curved upward, so as to forma curved recess, and within this recess is supported the base of a helical spring f, the head of which presses against the underside of the head a of the cover.
The cover A may be applied to any use for which it is desirable. As shown, it is applied as a closing-cover to a powder-gun B of a common construction.
It will be seen that my invention provides a very simple and cheap cover, in which the spring is carried by and forms a part of the cover and is firmly held in place, while at the same time it may readily be removed for the insertion of a new spring or any other pur pose.
It will be understood that the body of the cover A may be of any other suitable construction forming a flexible cover, and the features forming my invention are of general application in springcovers. The term cover is intended to include all constructions similar to that shown, Whether the part carrying the spring be applied to the common use of closing a receptacle or not.
\Vhat I claim is- 1. A flexible cover provided with an inwardly-extending flange and a helical spring having its base seated on said flange and its head pressing against the inside of the cover, substantially as described.
2. A flexible cover having the head a, a ring 0, connected to said head by flexible material and provided with inwardly-extendin g curved flange e, and a helical spring f, having its base seated in said flange and its head pressing against the head a of the cover, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
DANIEL M. SOMERS. WVitnesses:
OsoAE M. BERRY, HUBERT G. MAGNUS.
