UNITED STATES PATENT OEETCE.
RICHARD T. LEMAR, OF VVABASH, GIBSON COUNTY, INDIANA.
END-GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 467,420, dated January 19, 1892.
Application iled October 16, 1891.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD T. LEMAR, a citizen of the United States, residing in Iabash township, in the county of Gibson and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful End-Gate, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in end-gates.
The object of the present invention is to provide an end-gate forcorn-wagons, which gate will be suiiiciently large to accommodate a workman and permit him to shovel with ease while standing upon the platform formed by the end-gate when the latter is lowered for scooping.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of an end-gate constructed in accordance with this invention and shown applied to a wagon-body. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, the end-gate being lowered for scooping.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawl designates a vehicle-body, having hinged to it an end-gate 2, which is designed to be lowered to a horizontal position for scooping and which is provided with a supplemental section 3 to increase the size of the platform formed by the end-gate to provide am ple room for shoveling.
The end-gate is provided with wings 4, and its size is determined by the height of the sides of the body, and the supplemental section, which is hinged to the end-gate, is of any desired size to make the platform formed by the end-gate sufficiently large for convenient shoveling. The supplemental section may Serial No. 408,897. (No model.)
be swung back when the end-gate is closed or be arranged over the body, and it is pro* vided at its sides with supplemental wings 5, and has an end-board G, connecting the outer ends of the wings, and it is secured to the end-gate by hinges 7.
The end-gate is secured in its various positions by chains 8, each having one end attached tothe supplemental section of the end-gate and its other end adapted to be secured to a hook 9,arranged on the outer face of the side of the body and adapted to en` gage the links of the chain, whereby the endgate may be readily adjusted, as desired.
Vhat I claim isl. The combination, with a body, of an endgate hinged to the bottom of the body and provided with wings, a supplemental .extension-section hinged to the end-gate and adapted to swing back out of the way when the end-gate is in a vertical position and provided with supplemental wings forming coutinuations of the wings of the end-gate and having an end-board 6, connecting the wings, and means for securing the end-gate in its various positions, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with a body provided on its sides with hooks, an end-gate hinged to the bottom of the body and provided with Wings, a supplemental section hinged to the end-gate and arranged to swing back out of the way when the end-gate is in a vertical position and provided with supplemental wings and having an end-board connecting the wings, and chains secured to the supplemental section and adapted to engage the hooks of the body, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
