W. S. RICHARDSON. WATCH GASE PENDANT.
No. 466,965. Patented Jan. 12, 1892 WITNESSES. v INVENTOH IMW @M MMW ATTORNEY.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
\VILLIS S. RICHARDSON, OF NEVARK, NEW JERSEY.
WATCH-CASE PENDANT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 466,965, dated January 12, 1892.
Application filed July 9, 1891'. Serial No. 398.877. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIS S. RICHARDSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pendants for WVatchgases, of which the following is a specifica- My invention relates to an improvement in pendants for watch-cases, the object of the movements.
With these .ends in view my invention con sists in certain'novel features of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a View, partly in section, of my improved pendant, the winding stem or arbor being shown in position for winding the movement. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the stem or key in position to set the hands. Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line osmof Fig. 1,the bow being removed. Fig. 4 is a detached perspective View of the collar or sleeve adapted to encircle the winding-arbor to hold the same in its several adjustments. Fig. 5 is a detached view in perspective of the nuts for holding the sleeve or collar in position in its different adjustments.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the shell or pendant having the bow B secured thereto in the usual manner. On either side of the openings provided for the insertion of the ends of the bow B the pendant A is provided internally with the screw-thread a, with which engage the nuts 0 D, the latter being provided with the grooves or recesses 17 for the insertion of a key (not shown) adapted to turn said nuts into their proper places.
E represents the stem passing through the shell or pendant A and threaded at one end into a crown F,hollowed out, as shown,'to receive and overlap the end of the pendant. The stem is. formed into a key at its extreme end, as usual, and is provided at some point between the nuts 0 D with the annular shoulder or rib G, extending entirely around the same. Between these nuts C D and encircling the stem or arbor is located a sleeve or collar H, made of tempered metal and held stationary by said nuts, which impinge upon and against the edges of the same. This sleeve is fluted, as shown, forming the two recesses c c, and slitted vertically, as shown at cl, Fig. 4.
It will be understood from this description that when it is desired to partially withdraw the stem or arbor E from the watch-case center for the purpose of allowing the watchmovement to be inserted therein or removed therefrom or for the purpose of setting the hands, as the case maybe,it is simplynecessary to slightly pull the crown F in a direction away from the pendant, which will cause a similar movement of the stem or arbor, the shoulder G thereon jumping from the recess 0' into the upper recess 0, as shown in Fig. 2, the collaror sleeve slightly expanding by reason of its being slitted, as described, and again contracting when the parts assume the position as shown in Fig. 2. A slight pressure on the crown F will again cause the parts to assume their normal position, as shown in Fig. 1,the shoulder on the stem or arbor jumping back into the recess o. By threading the two nuts 0 D into the shell or pendant A they may be raised or lowered with the sleeve or collar between them, thereby increasing or decreasing the distance to which the stem extends into the movement to adapt it to the difierent kinds or sizes thereof.
The invention is exceedingly simple in its construction and operation and can be produced at a comparatively small cost.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with the pendant threaded on its interior, of a stem or arbor passing through said pendant and provided with a crown at one end and with a shoulder nuts 0 D, fitting in said shell and bearingagainst the edges of said collar or sleeve, as and for the purpose set forth.
Signed at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, this 10th day of June, A. D1891.
\VILLIS S. RICHARDSON.
