SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 443,480, dated December 23, 1890.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES W. HATHA- WAY, a citizen of the United States, residing in the cityand county of Philadelphia, State 5 of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Arbors of XVatches, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention consists of an improvement in a watch-arbor, whereby the same is connected with the catch-spring, avoiding a screw in the pendant, and the crown is held tightly on the pendant.
Figure 1 represents a longitudinal section of a watch-arbor embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 represents a perspective view of a detached portion.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the center of a watch-case, and B designates the pendant thereof, both in general respects be- 2 5 ing of usual construction.
0 designates the catch spring through which passes the inner end of the arbor D, the latter being provided with a shoulder D near said end.
0 Within the pendant is a sleeve E, which encircles the arbor D, one end of said sleeve being screw-threaded and engaging with a threaded opening in the under side of the crown F, the other end bearing against the 3 5 spring 0 on the side opposite to the shoulder D. It will be seen that when the crown is pressed as it bears against the sleeve E and the latter bears against the catch-spring said spring is moved for opening the watch, as
0 usual in such cases. lVhen the spring returns to its normal position, the shoulder D prevents the arbor from being withdrawn outwardly and disconnected from the spring. It will also be seen that the crown is held tightly on the pendant, whereby it is prevented from rattling, it being noticed that the end of the spring is clamped between the shoulder D and sleeve E, and thus the crown is firmly sustained. It is evident that when the crown is unscrewed the arbor may be removed by being passed through the spring into the center, and the sleeve may be removed through the outer end of the pendant.
The arbor, sleeve, and crown may be restored to their operative positions by inserting the arbor through the spring into the pendant, fitting the sleeve over the arbor in the pendant, and screwing the crown to the arbor, so as to locate the crown and connect the same with the sleeve, whereby the spring may be operated, as previously stated, it being noticed that the inner end of the arbor projects sufiiciently from the spring for engagement with the winding mechanism usual in such cases.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a watch-case, an arbor having a shoulder near one end thereof, a catch-spring directly engaging said arbor above said shonlder, a sleeve surrounding said arbor and having its lower end bearing against the outer surface of the said spring, and a pendant having within it a sleeve formed with a screw- 7 5 threaded openiu g to receive the screw-thread ed end of the arbor, and against which the upper end of the aforesaid sleeve has bearing, said parts being combined substantially as described.
