No. 466,335. Patented Jan 5, 1892.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS J. FLAGG, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO FISK, CLARK &
. FLAGG, OF SAME PLACE.
SHIRT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 466,335, dated January 5, 1892.
Application filed September 22, 1891- Serial No. 406,476. (No model.)
To all whom itmay concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS J. FLAGG, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shirts; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
My invention relates to shirts which have combined therewith the lapels or front of a vest in order to present the appearance of a shirt worn with a vest without the actual discomfort of a Vest; and it has for its object to improve the construction of such combinationshirts in such manner that the comfort of the wearer will be increased, that the garment may more readily be put on and 01f, andthat the neatness and elegance of appearance may be greatly enhanced.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front view of a shirt constructedin accordance with my invention, the same being represented, for convenience, as folded. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the converging plaits which represent the vest-front, the collar and body of theshirt being indicated in dotted lines; and Fig. 3 is a section on the line :20 a: of Fig. l.
The shirt A, which is preferably of the class known as negligee, is open infront, as indicated by the line F and the buttons G, and has a tnrn-down collar E, secured to the neckband. To the upper portion of the shirt-front and in such position as to have their inner corners concealed beneath the collar E are secured the upper ends of converging plaits B B. The lower ends of said plaits overlap, the one over the other, and are secured together to the shirt-front at a point below the lower end of the opening F. The outer edges of the plaits are attached to the sides of the shirt-front by lines of stitching C C, while the inner edges are free from the upper to the lower end.
In the construction above describedthe garment is given a more finished and neat appearance about the neck by the lapping of the collar over the upper ends of the plaits,
mit the shirt to be removed, besides'detract-- ing from the comfort which it is the object of a negligee shirt to secure.
I claim as my invention The combination, with a shirt open in front and a turn-down collar secured to the neck band thereof, of converging plaits attached at their upper ends to the shirt-front beneath the collar and at their lower ends overlapping and secured to the shirt-front below the lower end of the opening, and having their outer edges sewed to the sides of the shirt-front and their inner edges free from the upper to the lower end, substantially as shown and described.
. In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
THOMAS J. FLAGG.
