R.M. TUBBS. FOUNTAIN 0R STYLOGRAPHIG PEN.
No. 466,201.. Patented Dec. 29, 1891.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
REESE M. TUBBS, OF SIIICKSHINNY, PENNSYLVANIA.
FOUNTAIN OR STYLOGRAPHIC PEN.
SPCIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 466,201, dated December 29, 1891.
Application iiled August 19, 1891. Serial No.403,126. l (No model.)
' To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, REESE M. TUBES, of Shickshinny, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fountain or Stylographic Pens; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification. i
My invention relates to an improvement in fountain or stylographic pens; and it consists in the construction, which will be fully described hereinafter and particularly referred to in the claims.
The object of my invention is to provide an attachment for fountain, stylographic, or other pen holders, which relates to a cap that is weighted, so that when the cap is removed from over the pen and placed upon the opposite end of the pen or the pen-holder the heft of the cap will be sufficient to cause that end of the holder to strike the floor or ground first when the pen is dropped, thus protecting the pen and preventing it from injury and from being broken by having it strike the door or other object when the pen is accidentally dropped.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side'elevation of a pen, showingmy attachment applied to the pen end of the holder, the attachment being shown in section. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, the cap or attachment being shown at the opposite end of the holder and the attachment in section.
A indicates an ordinary fountain or stylographic pen, and B a cap, which is designed to be placed over the pen as a means of protection when the pen is not in use and which is placed upon the opposite end of the pen when it is in use. This cap is of the or-V dinary external construction, except perhaps it may be a little longer, and it has its outer or closed end filled with a heavy substance,
such as lead or any other convenient substance C. This substance or Weight C is provided With a tapering cavity or recess D at its inner end for the reception of the pen G. When this cap B is placed upon the opposite end of the holder from the pen, the heft of the cap causes it to strike the floor or other object when the pen is accidentally dropped, instead of its falling sidewise or most likely upon its point, and thus spoil the point of the pen, and in the case of fountain-pens break the outer end of the feed.
Owing to the weight of a fountain-pen, when it is dropped and the pen-point strikes it is almost invariably broken or injured, and this fact has greatly reduced the popularity and use of the pen. By means of acap, such as shown here the pen will be protected against injury when accidentally dropped, which will add to the practical use of fountain and other similar pens. This cap can be sold and applied to fountain-pens now in use in place of the ordinary cap at a very small price and which will be of great utility to the uses of fountain-pens.
Having thus described my invention, I claiml. A n attachment for fountain or other pens, consisting of a cap having an open end, its opposite end closed, and a weight within the cap at its closed end only, whereby its open end is adapted to fit both ends of the holder, as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination, with a fountain or other pen holder, of a cap having one end open to fit the holder and its other end provided with a Weight, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. Y
3. An attachment for fountain or other pens, consisting of a cap having an open end adapted to fit the ends of a fountain or other pen holder and having a weight at its opposite end, which is provided with a cavity or
